The Central Los Angeles Area High School for the visual and performing arts by COOP HIMMELB(L)AU has just been completed. The school will open for the new school year in September 2009. The Central Los Angeles Area High School for the Visual and Performing Arts of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is part of phase II of LAUSD's rigorous state bond funded plan to have 155 new schools built in its district by 2012

Performing Arts Theater The Performing Arts Complex consists of the entrance lobby, main auditorium with orchestra pit, stage with fly loft, back stage, flexible theater, scene construction area and an outdoor amphitheater with stage area. The highly efficient concept of organizing the performance spaces back-to-back with the stage and backstage in the middle (serving both) was prioritized over the connection of the flexible theater to the lobby.

High School For the Visual and Performing Arts in Los Angeles, designed by COOP HIMMELB(L)AU architect Wolf . rix, has been awarded the 2011 Red Dot Design Award. The school campus designed by Wolf D. Prix of COOP HIMMELB(L)AU includes seven buildings: a theatre, a library, a cafeteria and four buildings of classrooms, one for each discipline in the arts: the visual arts, the performing arts, music and dance.

It discusses the principles of urban planning that drove the design as well as the important social and cultural aspects of such a project.
