I wish every architecture guide was this well layed out and thorough, but I so grateful that my city of Houston was given such a great guide.

I wish every architecture guide was this well layed out and thorough, but I so grateful that my city of Houston was given such a great guide. Houston is famous for it's modern architecture of course, but this guide covers some of the older buildings and give you a real history of architecture in this city so infamous for its lack of zoning and attitude that everything new is better.

Houston Architectural Guide: American Institute of Architects Houston. I bought the spiral-bound volume, which comes to 350 pages of Houston's built environment. Now, I will have to admit that Houston is not the most beautiful city, and its reputation for architectural preservation is abysmal, but for those of you adventuresome enough to look at what a modern-day boom town looks like, this is the best possible book. It is very, very good.

This is one of the best architecture guides on the market. I am from Houston so I am familiar with the city, so I can say without hesitation that this book is the benchmark on houston architecture. The guide is presented in sections and each section covers a certain part of the city, each section comes with a requisite map and the location of every structure covered is on there. Though the lack of zoning has not caused Houston to really be layed out any different than any other city, Atlanta is layed out much like Houston and its always had very strict zoning laws as has Dallas. If you have any interest in architecture or of Houston, then I highly recommend this fantastic guide.

Yes, this is a superb architecture survey of a city that is not frequently thought of for great architecture.

It is written in standard AIA format, and includes about 500 entries. Be careful. Don't pay too much for this book when you can get a second edition (updated through 1999) for much less.

This is a great guide. It is extremely thorough and well researched. AIA Guides tend to be hit and miss, but this one is definitely a hit. It spends just enough time on each section of the city. Houston has an interesting architectural history that this guide showcases with aplomb. I highly recommend this guide to anyone who has the slightest interest in architecture, it will not disappoint.
