This is an excellent book if you want a very thorough explanatory treatment of the subject of 3D computer graphics and animation ... very in-depth, very appropriate for use as a college textbook ... so that by the time you are finished with it (many months from now) you'll really understand how things "fit." Take your time and read slowly and carefully. The book's editorial design is conducive to that.
I find that "getting the big picture" in any technical subject is the most difficult task. Existing practitioners usually know it so well they can't explain it. This author can. As you can see on his bio ([...] he's got the credits. I selected the book primarily for this purpose, and certainly got what I was expecting.
The book assembly style gets a little TEDIOUS with loads of BOLD-FACE type on many pages (every KEY PHRASE is BOLD, which kinda gets in the way) but that's an editorial quibble.
I hope that the next edition will include Ambient Occlusion, and also a greater mention of the existence of (free!) open-source products like Blender, ([...]) which do implement even the advanced concepts discussed in the book and are quite readily available to the general public.

Clear and detailed. Concepts in the modeling world are often nebulously cataloged at best you are kind of expected to in the know about them from cultural osmossis and even then you may not understand them if they are deeply related to and described via a different field such as mathematics and computer science. This book does a good job collecting them all in a single space and describing what they are in comprehensive ways backed by visuals.

I bought this book for my animation class and I have found it to be very interesting and informative. It is not hard to read for types who may not like reading. It goes from the history of animation and the history of the computer as it relates to computer use in animation and visual effects, to the different methods of animation. It uses references from many films and video games we are all familiar with. A good book for anyone interested in animation or visual effects.

This book is a fantastic resource that gives a person interested in 3D Animation and effects a total overview of the entire process. It gives a great background of the history of computer animation. It even goes as far as to show how the production process is setup for any level of animation production from beginning to end. It takes away the mystery surrounding how to make an animated film. Although it explains the many methods employeed by the industry today, it's not devoted to describing how one set of tools work. This book is a must for anyone contemplating entering into 3D animation and effects on any level--including games. Or just someone curiuose to know how this stuff is done. A good read that will provide a headstart for those seriously interested in this diverst art.
A good book but you got to know what you're doing to use it.
It's not for the beginner so you know what you doin get it.
