G1 New Dimensions in Graphic Design Paperback.

G1 is a collection of contemporary graphic design like no other. G1 gathers innovative work from many of the world's most influential designers, and then omits their names from the pages. G1 presents some of the very best of high design and mixes it with raw vernacular graphics, the found images that inspire designers.G1 gives the reader the choice as to whether to see graphics as "authored" works or as part of the exciting continuum of communication that is art direction and design today. While identities are detached from the images, they are available on printed stickers bound into the book for the reader to attach if desired.G1 also invites and provokes readers to follow a journey in space and time. The projects included are placed in sections of two-, three- and four-dimensional design. A supporting text explains the ideas that link the pieces, while the main introduction examines the major themes that appear to excite today's most cutting-edge graphic designers.G1 includes magazine and book design; new media-both internet and CD-Rom, posters; type and typography; packaging,; signage and identities; and more.G1 is not a book for the passive. Rather the readers are invited to interact with the book to make it their own. With 460 illustrations, 398 in color.

The cover is best thing about this now dated attempt to locate design not just in the work of an elite world of artists and designers, but also in the "vernacular"-that is, the everyday items that surround us. To that end, the book positions "found" items such as shipping boxes, torn up billboards, and scraps of paper next to commercial packaging, next to highly designed pieces. What happens is that next to same old overdesigned catalog spreads, arty CD packaging, and industry self-promo pieces, the found objects become a lot more interesting. Of course, I didn't need a book to tell me that, a simple walk down my litter-strewn and graffittied street does the trick just as well. The editors try and get all clever by not putting designer credits next to the pieces, instead printing them on removable stickers in the rear.

This book isnt what I expected when I first recieved it. When I first skimmed through this book my initial reaction was- I have seen most of this stuff before and its good, and the content I had not seen was what I thought to be ... but its not. When you stop skimming and start reading and really looking at what is presented in this book you will realize the point it is making. This book is not full of the greatest pieces of graphic design and it wasnt meant to be. Instead it is a differant look at design. It is communication through dimensions and the vernacular. What impressed me most about this book is that after looking through it I got alot of new ideas.

The book presents the reader a collection of worlds finest, revolutionary and contemporary graphic design. Work from various designers is used to show the current spirit of graphic design, together with common images put in juxtaposition with their environment. A real must for anybody interested in design in its many different forms.

A well thought-out collection of graphic design from, well, everywhere. An Autechre album cover, a page from a 60s intelligence test, a CV purposefully sent as crumpled paper, 35mm slides, a general store receipt. All organized into a beautiful, inspiring book.
