The book Rodarte, Catherine Opie, Alec Soth is a collaboration between the four artists to better explain the minds behind Rodarte. The sisters employed photographers Catherine Opie and Alec Soth (neither of whom have a background in fashion) to help tell a story about the inspiration behind Rodarte’s designs. Although the designers set out to create a book about their inspirations, they didn’t have a specific path in mind. Instead, they gave a lot of creative freedom to the photographers, allowing the narrative to evolve organically.

California Condors, Boris Karloff as Frankenstein, Japanese horror films and Gordon Matta-Clark are among the many influences that make up the world of Rodarte. In just five short years, Rodarte has upended the fashion scene, bringing Kate and Laura Mulleavy, the designers behind the company, to the forefront of contemporary design and visual culture. Kate and Laura, who live and work between downtown Los Angeles and Pasadena, California, have consistently brought their love of nature, film, art and science to bear upon their unconventional and exquisitely crafted collections. Burning, sanding, dyeing, knitting, twisting, staining and weaving are some of the many complex techniques that have entered into the Rodarte textural vocabulary. Kate and Laura's past collaborations have included artists, actors, musicians and writers such as Miranda July, Autumn de Wilde, Ryan McGinley, Ari Marcopoulos and Darren Aronofsky. What a disappointment! I was really looking forward to this book on Rodarte because I find their designs so interesting. Little did I know that there would be very few actual photos of their work. Most of it is photos of other things -- landscapes, etc. Also, some of the pages were completely blank (by design I imagine). It was also printed in a very muted way so the colors were not as expected -- they were dull and uninteresting. Also, the cover is white and of a texture that will dirty easily and there's no dust cover. I wouldn't waste money on this one and should have sent it back.

I ordered this book because I am a fan of the featured photographers and didn't really know anything about Rodarte's fashion. The images are powerful and haunting. The poetic juxtaposition of the found and orchestrated photographs are the real joy of this book. Soth and Opie have always been exceptional photographers and it is interesting to see the way they've come together to make this book project. That said, it should be noted that this book has not one drop of ink dedicated to text of any kind (the title pages are done with embossed letters). If you are looking for a lengthy, written examination or explanation, there is none of that for you here.

This must be another PR piece.... I mean, I would like to read a book on what people in fashion REALLY think about Rodarte, why Anna Wintour hesitates to say what she really thinks.... and how did a mediocre design find way in the window of Bergdorf. That book I would read.

I'm hoping that someday soon the real story about Rodarte will come out. Whoever masterminded this elaborate hoax is a brilliant trickster.
