Now with his ART OF COLOR Johannes Itten makes a contribution. Using Holzel's theory as a springboard, Itten has expanded and developed it along his own original lines. The subjective perceptual experience and objective laws of color produce a tension of opposites shown in this book by many examples in color. A comprehensive knowledge of the objective laws is required to grow beyond the subjective laws of color is required to grow beyond the subjective narrowness of conception which is everybody's preliminary approach to the manifestations of color in everyday life and art. Itten fully understood these difficulties.

The Art of Color book. Itten's color explanations and exercises, followed and enlarged by his discussions of color in master paintings, helps to quantify both how colors are used and how they shape what we see, think, and feel. A book to supplement, not replace, an intuitive approach to color use, it both sharpens the eye and focuses attention. Both beautiful and informative, these Bauhaus lessons are still "Colors are forces, radiant energies that affect us positively or negatively, whether we are aware of it or no.

I am very disappointed with the colour reproduction and wonder if the version I purchased through Amazon is true to the original or not (I would be surprised if the original was thus terrible). I believe I did not get value for the price I paid. I purchased the John Wiley & Sons version (copyright 2004) through Amazon and note that colours, brightness, shades etc are different to the 1973 version that I borrowed from the library. I haven't seen the original 1961 version so can't compare them. The 2004 version (compared to the 1973 version) lacks a vibrancy and lightness to the colours, for example the important Fig.58 on page 55 (the 13x12 set of squares) is poorly reproduced with little if any differentiation in brilliance particularly in the bottom half of the table. Many of the illustrative exercises and reproduced paintings have similar very poor colour reproduction. Very disappointing. Some are worse than others. Nonetheless, it contains extremely valuable information on Itten's methodology and discussion about various artworks, theory of colour, etc.

Itten's course was a pre-requisite at the Bauhaus and after reading through this book, I understand why. I have learned a lot about how I want to use color in my art by learning the principles here.

When I bought this several years ago it was very expensive and for Kindle. Like, $60 or so. BUT it is the ONLY book about color that I actually got wonderful information I can use as a painter. Worth 10 times what I paid for it. Genius.

We have both the original printing (1961) and the later printing (1973). The later printing fails to do justice to Itten's principles. The colours in the colour wheel are quite different in the two printings and in terms of principles of colour interaction the colours in the original (1961) printing are far superior. Our rating of 5 stars applies to the 1961 printing.

It's what I wanted. It is quite a complicated book, but the color aspects are what I need.
Thank you for getting it to me in good time.

The Art of Color was purchased as a gift for a dear friend who teaches Color Theory. The book was in mint condition and I was amazed at that. I purchased this particular book because it was recommended as guaranteed by Amazon. It certainly was a good buy.

My friend was "blown away" by the book.

Thank you so much for offering for purchase.

Classic
Johannes Itten's book about colour is a classic - not to be missed by anyone seriously interested in colour. It's not only brimming with technical information about colour - it also has a very sensitive, almost poetic edge. The language is beautiful, and so are the many colour reproductions in the book. I do not recommend it warmly, but - hotly!
