Jiri Georg Dokoupil was born in Krnov, former Czechoslovakia, in 1954. In 1976 he began studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cologne. Later on he also attended classes at the Universities of Frankfurt and the Cooper Union in New York, where he studied among others under German concept artist Hans Haacke. The influence of Haacke is evident in Dokoupil‘s early work. From 1983–84 Dokoupil was guest professor at the Academy of Fine Arts of Düsseldorf and 1989 in Madrid.

Founding member of the wild youth art collectives Mülheimer Freiheit and Junge Wilde, artist Jiří Georg Dokoupil is known for defying classification with his continually evolving artistic style. Exploring over one hundred different artistic techniques and experimenting with neo-expressionism, figuration, and avant-garde styles, Dokoupil can only be described as a postmodern artist. In 1989 he began a series of soot paintings, using the flame of a candle as a paintbrush to depict figures such as Jesus Christ.

Today, the internationally renowned Dokoupil is considered one of the most conceptually diverse artists working within contemporary art. Over the past 25 years, he has provocatively and ironically expanded the traditional boundaries of artistic genres by creating works whose specific materials stand in a direct relationship to their mode of production.

About Jiri Georg Dokoupil. Jiří Georg Dokoupil may be regarded as an icon of the contemporary Czech art scene. The story of his escape in 1968, his solitary suffering, adaptation, discovery and final establishment is a dramatic one, and one that forms his personality. It is a story in which art remains at the forefront. The young Dokoupil experienced his first year in emigration in cultural and linguistic shock. He exhibited, however, a combative spirit, which was certainly also a result of his early sporting activities
