I didn't know who Milton Glaser was before picking up this book, and I'm not sure I have any better idea now, after reading this. The images of the artist are intriguing, but not my style. I like the section of work rejected by clients.

Milton Glaser is perhaps the most celebrated graphic designer in the world.

As a young man, he read a phrase that stayed with him through his life: "In Search of the Miraculous." One could say that all human experience is a miracle--memory, color, taste, Vermeer, stars, watermelon, etc. For those like Glaser, the act of making things that move the mind is perhaps the deepest aspiration to the miraculous. In this volume, he has chosen work, largely created by him over the last five years, to demonstrate how one concept leads to another. Through fascinating juxtapositions, readers will gain insights into Glaser's oeuvre, journeying with him as he discovers that seemingly new designs frequently come out of provocative ideas taken from the distant past.

I was very disappointed in this volume of Milton Glaser designs. I'm not sure if he is coasting or if this is just a bad collection of recent work. The text is not illuminating either which was more disappointing since I have enjoyed Glaser's thoughts on design in his most recent interviews and articles. I'm tempted to blame some of the poor effect on the printing but I am not sure if that is necessarily the case. Certainly some pages have full color and tone value.

About the only design I enjoyed in this book was the carpet he designed for The School of Visual Design Theater. And what was up with the Shakespeare project? The final pieces were neither good illustration nor interesting design. And why does Glaser use red and green together so much? His use of color in this book seemed incredibly cliché to me. Pass on this one unless you can buy it for $.27 like I did.

As a graphic designer and artist I've experienced how one project leads to another to another to another so it was fun to follow Milton's path from various projects to each other.

If the book had been well printed on good paper I might have liked it ok but the paper and ink did not mesh to make good imagery. The book was supposed to be an arty little book but the printing quality was a disaster.

Milton Glaser is one of the great graphic designers, teachers and all around gurus who is as willing to share his ideas as create them. In Search of the Miraculous is my companion reader with Zen in the Art of Photography, by robert leverant. Reminders......

As a Milton Glaser fan, my opinion may be slightly slanted. This novel came out at the end of my senior year in college, and I am so happy it did. It gave me hope, and inspiration, and it made me so excited for my career to come.

Milton Glaser is a renowned graphic designer. This small handsome book presents some of his designs.
It contains an introduction explaining who he is, designs and comments by Glaser, an interesting section of designs that clients did not like. Although I wish he would have told us, why they didn't. In most cases the designs are shown and then the actual results of what it looked like in completed form.

It is a small book, so many of the pictures are small; but it is a book that would interest graphic designers and fans of Milton Glaser.

Easy enough to read over a lunch break as the bulk of the content is imagery. The message, though, is really thought provoking: everything we produce is connected in some way to what we've done in the past. Milton shows this through a body of work selected over a five year period that demonstrates how an idea for one work threaded another.
