Nice historical perspective without getting too involved. I didn't know anything about Guernica before I read this and I knew very little about Picasso. It made me want to do a little more research, which I love to do. I was intrigued by Picasso's feelings for Spain even though he lived most of his life in France.

Love this book about Picasso. I was looking for old photographs and stories that might help us authenticate many works we have signed by Picasso, but have not been authenticated.

Martin's book is a good read. He tells the story of the creation and history of "La Guernica" in a very engaging style, and I think his topic is an important one. He is a bit sentimental at times, but his sentiment is in the right place. Also he does not dig too deeply in trying to discuss the meaning of the specific symbols and imagery of Picasso's painting. Otherwise, I would have given it five stars.

Wonderfully written and insightful as to the causes and results of WW11. Picasso was a remarkable man not just a great artist.
This is an extremely informative history book. I learned so much. I had known there was Spanish Civil War and had read "For Whom The Bell Tolls". But I was foggy on the details and, am somewhat embarrassed to admit I was not familiar with Picasso's related painting. This book brings all of the above together in a very interesting narrative.

Another reviewer stated there is little actual artwork I this book. That is true for my copy also. It is essentially all text. Most art books I have contain examples of art. This is basically a history book. At least mine is, I do not know if there are various editions.

I am quite sure there are individuals with a lot more knowledge of Spain, Picasso, and The Spanish Civil War, than I have. I have always wanted to have more knowledge of this country than I do. I personally found this book extremely educational in many areas. Thank You...
