Charles Sullivan beautifully matches poetry to art throughout this anthology. I so enjoyed snuggling up in bed and reading a few pages of poems before bed! I would first read the poem, then study the art, and reread the poem.

Poetry and Art for Young People. The collection's subtitle, ''Poetry and Art for Young People,'' indicates an intelligent approach to illustration that lies somewhere between the old children's poetry book, chock-full of poems and punctuated just here and there with little drawings or type decorations, and today's full-color graphic extravaganzas hung on one or two often inadequate verses. By using photographs and fine-art reproductions that relate to the poems, some imaginative and subtle alliances are created. Not all the word-picture combinations are completely successful.

The juxtaposition of art and poetry is not an original concept, but this volume contains an especially felicitous selection. Imaginary Gardens includes poetry by Rosemary and Steven Vincent Benet, Robert Bly, e. e. cummings, Emily Dickinson, T. S. Eliot, Robert Frost, Bret Harte, Langston Hughes, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, James Russell Lowell, Marianne Moore, Howard Nemerov, Edgar Allan Poe, Carl Sandburg, Shel Silverstein, May Swenson, Robert Penn Warren, Walt Whitman, John Greenleaf Whittier, and others.
