Incisively political and profoundly poetic, William Kentridge's protean artistic investigation continues in his beautiful series of tapestries begun in 2001. Listen to or download Curator Carlos Basualdo's 2-part Podcast. The tapestries stem from a series of drawings in which he conjured shadowy figures from ripped construction paper and collaged them onto the web-like background of nineteenth-century atlas maps.

South African artist William Kentridge (b. 1955) has produced an outstanding body of work in multiple mediums―drawings, animations, sculptures, theater and stage design―all of which trace the fraught political and cultural history of South Africa. This book is the first to explore Kentridge’sextraordinary new series of seventeen large-scale tapestries, created under his artistic direction by a team of South African weavers between 2001 and 2007. The tapestries depict shadowy figures that resonate with his collages of itinerant characters set against the weblike backgrounds of 19th-century maps of Europe and Johannesburg.

A distinguished group of authors relate the tapestries to the rest of Kentridge’smultifaceted oeuvre, underline the centrality of drawing in his practice, and illuminate the connection between the tapestries and South African geography and history. Together theycontribute to an understanding ofKentridge’s tapestries as a precise critical examination of issues surrounding memory and conflict in the context of societies that, while rife with violence, strive for peace and reconciliation.

The text "Tapestries" provides a strong insight into how drawings and collage can be extended through the discipline of tapestry. The tapestries, because of their structure, add fluidity and colour to the dynamism of the original drawings. They are an appropriate extension to Kentridge's work, in that they continue the soft edge but also the vitality of his drawings/collages. The tapestry workshop provides another strong element in Kentridge's collaborative endeavours towards a highly inventive portfolio.
The book is informative and beautifully produced.
