Frames of Reference: Art, History, and the World (with Stephen Eskilson) more. by Janet T. More Info: New York: McGraw-Hill, 2005. With her Lordship and Commune book, Abou-El-Haj was poised to inspire a new generation of art historians to grapple with the interrelations of political and social conditions and the aesthetics and iconographies of monumental art in the high Middle Ages. But the typescript she left behind was only half written and it would be impossible for even the most dedicated colleagues and students to complete it adequately.

Driven by the authors' conviction that education ought to be a process of inquiry rather than submission to received wisdom, Frames of Reference develops students’ critical understanding and appreciation of art by focusing on interesting intersections among the viewpoints of patrons, artists, viewers, and critics. Thematically organized with a chronological underpinning, the text includes thought-provoking chapter topics such as "The Earth as Art," "Representations of the Gods," "Patrons and the Role of the Artist," "Utopia and Dystopia," and "Identity in Contemporary Art."

Excellent book for teachers.

Cheap and exactly what I needed for my art class. The book store wanted to charge almost 6 times as much as what I paid for it.

This book was required for the course my daughter was taking but was hardly even referenced. As it was pretty much only cracked open once, I don't have much information other than it was packaged well and came with the referenced CD

I've seen this text sell used on auctions for over $300, yet some still are on Amazon new for under $20 from third parties. This is now out of print and becoming more and more rare. Beautiful and very unusual book, MEGA student friendly.

Dwindling availability is a bit of a tragedy, because this is one of the finest art education books ever written from a strictly pedagogical frame. The authors assume the student is not an idiot, and memorizing ratios, names, bios and time/style intersections is NOT the best way to teach not only art appreciation, but the underlying communication process involving much more than just the artist, environment, topic or style, and including multiple points of view that have to come together on a kind of razor's edge to reach the peaks from each viewpoint, and delight as well as convey meaning.

Please be aware that there have been several printings of this volume, and not all of them included a CD. These aren't new "editions," just printings, so you can't tell. If a seller lists a book as "new" there is supposed to be a CD, UNLESS the seller specifically states "may not include original media" or something similar. If a seller says "in original publisher's wrap" that doesn't necessarily mean the cd is there, as all editions didn't have it. The original website also is now down.

The CD (to be honest!) is not really that big a deal other than for visual enjoyment, the book's copy - text is plentiful about the viewpoints given and ideas suggested. Every page is filled with a kind of "sympathy" for the student/reader as if art appreciation should be fun, astonishing, revelatory and NOT memorization, "testing" etc. GREAT attitude, the type of teachers you'd always like to have. Also ideal for autodidacts/self study as it is very self contained.

Highly recommended, but since no longer on Amazon, communicate with your third party if you're not sure of details. Don't go below "very good" if notes, highlighting, etc. bother you, and new is always safest, because it can't include markings. "Like new" CAN include stamps like "withdrawn" from library books, and even stamps on the spines and often does not include media. The seller (theoretically) SHOULD note if there is a name etc. in a book listed "like new." No seller selling books rated very good or like new with highlighting will have a rating over 95 as a general reference point, as that is clearly deceptive.

The book was what I need, but the excessive writing and highlighting was a bit much for the price. Every page seems to be in tact and somewhat readable. The seller stated some highlighting, but just about every page was writen on or colored. But it must do for now. Also the book didn't come with the cd-rom as stated.
