The catalogue of Balthus: Cats and Girls is a beautiful piece of work, admirably levelheaded in its treatment of his involvement with his young models. -Jed Perl, The New Republic. Balthasar Klossowski de Rola (February 29, 1908 – February 18, 2001), known as Balthus, was a Polish-French modern artist. He is known for his erotically charged images of pubescent girls, but also for the refined, dreamlike quality of his imagery. Throughout his career, Balthus rejected the usual conventions of the art world. He insisted that his paintings should be seen and not read about, and he resisted any attempts made to build a biographical profile

When I started to organize this exhibition, I found an old, typed letter dated 1981 that I’d written to Rilke’s heirs, who had told me at the time that they could help me locate the Mitsou drawings. Our conservator did painstaking work on them, but she left ink spots to show you that these drawings are nearly 100 years old. ZWICK Why were the originals in Rilke’s family instead of the Klossowski family? REWALD Balthus gave them to Rilke as a gift. Rilke was a father figure to Balthus.

An insightful new look at Balthus's ongoing fascination with cats and girls, including his controversial paintings of young adolescents. Balthus's lifelong curiosity with the ambiguities and dark side of childhood resulted in his best-known and most iconic works. In these pictures, Balthus (1908-2001) mingles intuition into his young sitters' psyches with overt erotic desire and forbidding austerity, making them among the most powerful depictions of childhood and adolescence ever committed to canvas.

Curator Sabine Rewald’s central assertion is that the artist was not the source of the eroticism in the paintings on display, but in fact only acted as a sort of messenger, bringing model and viewer together in a way that exploits a mutual misunderstanding.

Balthus's lifelong fascination with the dark side of childhood resulted in his most iconic works: canvases depicting girls on the brink of puberty, hovering between innocence and knowledge. In these pictures, the artist mingled intuition into his young sitters' psyches with overt erotic desire and forbidding austerity. Balthus's portraits of a local young Parisienne named Therese Blanchard, and his interior scenes featuring Therese's various successors, are among the most powerful depictions of childhood and adolescence in the Western canon.
