I was excited to read more about Sargent after reading a very good history of Americans in Paris. However, this must be the most unsympathetic biography I've ever read. The author was condescending and his writing an obstacle to learning about his subject. In fact, I couldn't get beyond the first chapter. Very disappointing.

I really enjoyed the book. He was an interesting character who seemed to be liked by everyone and didn't take himself too seriously. My only complaint: for a book about a painter the figures are of poor quality.
