Enormously successful during his own lifetime, the 15th-century Flemish painter Hans Memling left a vast legacy of work, including landscapes, portraits, altarpieces and miniatures. Brilliantly colourful, and characterised by an air of fantasy and illusion far removed from the political turbulence and bloodshed of 15th-century Flanders, Memling's paintings have always been extremely popular with the general public.

Dirk de Vos is a Belgian art historian specialising in medieval art. He was the curator of the Groeningemuseum in Bruges. De Vos attended secondary school in Bruges, graduating in 1961. De Vos's magnum opus is a catalogue of the complete works of Hans Memling, on whom he curated a major exhibition in 1994. The work was identified in the museum catalogue of 1901 as a copy of a lost portrait by Memling.
