To Philip Glass, piano music is something intimate. It was no accident that his first CBS album, Glassworks, which was designed as an introduction to his music, began with solo piano. Though Glass characterizes much of the music on this recording as romantic, his performances are not in the virtuoso concert-hall tradition of Liszt or Rachmaninoff.

Solo Piano (1989) is an album of piano music composed and performed by Philip Glass. It was produced by Kurt Munkacsi. The title of five of the seven tracks, "Metamorphosis", refers to and was inspired by the 1915 novella The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. While all pieces were written in 1988, some were written for a staging of Metamorphosis, while others were for a documentary film called The Thin Blue Line directed by Errol Morris.

But by the time Glass sat down to record these piano pieces, he’d already begun to stray beyond the hardcore tenets of minimalism that he had helped develop in the '70s. His experience with operatic writing is clear throughout: The gorgeously lyrical Wichita Sutra Vortex (whose namesake is an Allen Ginsberg poem) became a staple of the contemporary repertoire shortly after this album was issued.

Here, Glass' connection to the established "classical" tradition is most evident. Though his pieces are "minimal" (subtly altered repeated patterns or melodic motifs), yet they have an unsentimental beauty and heartfelt grace that one would hear in . Bach's English Suites, as well as the piano music of Chopin and Erik Satie. Portions of the suite 'Metamorphosis' are based on Glass' score for THE THIN.

Numbers three and four are from Glass's incidental music to the play, which he wrote to fulfill separate but nearly simultaneous requests from two different theater companies.

I saw no listing of contents of the two Philip Glass piano books I found here, saw each on the other's "customers also bought" list, and took a chance. I'm keeping only "Solo Piano."

This book consists entirely of pieces written or, in one case, adapted for piano by Glass himself as far as I can tell: the five-part "Metamorphosis," "Mad Rush" (modified from an organ work, "Fourth Series Part 4"), and "Wichita Vortex Sutra," part of "Hydrogen Jukebox."

I'm returning "The Piano Collection" because its contents are the same "Metamorphosis," two shorter works for piano, and piano arrangements by other men of some of Glass's ensemble works - not what I'm interested in playing. I list the full contents in my review of that collection.

It would help if Amazon provided the same level of detail for music scores that they do for recorded music.

These pieces are the songs from the Solo Piano cd. Perfect for intermediate students, they work great as finger exercises as well. The songs increase in difficulty as the book goes on. My teacher was thrilled when I brought this book in to my lessons.

This book is spectacular. Philip Glass is a very wonderful composer and this book is very accessible to play. With just a small amount of practice; mediocre pianists can sound great. Very clean and easy to read.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

Perfect for Philip Glass lovers. Beginner-Intermediate piano.
Steel balls
First of all, this is a book of sheet-music for the Piano, by Philip Glass: I give it five stars because I like/love Glass's music, in general; and, in particular, I love these. Contents are: Metamorphosis (all, I-V), Mad Rush, and Wichita Vortex Sutra. The first five are in the soundtrack of the movie "The Hours" (which I also recommend). I bought this, however, for use on the Harp, which I play. As almost everyone who knows anything about Philip Glass, his musical style is basically "minimalist"; Glass himself calls it "music with repetitive structures", which makes this set of pieces great for finger exercise -- especially on the Harp, where certain fingering constraints exist. The level is mostly beginner-intermediate; they are best learned slowly (beginner), and with speed and practice become more advanced (intermediate). Also, in my opinion, the best recording of the five Metamorphosis on the Harp is by Lavinia Meijer (titled, "Glass: Metamorphosis, The Hours").

Not what I expected, a bit boring to my ear, and I don't get the right hand cross over the left on many of the pieces.
If you can play arpeggios worth a cent, you can play this flawlessly in one to two practice sessions per piece. The pieces consist of only a few lines of music each, which are repeated ad nauseum throughout the songs. It's an interesting style that provides good background music, but kind of grates on the ears after a while.
