Authentic progressive exercises and etudes for the contemporary piano student. Explains the elements of Blues style.

It covers the basic harmony you need to know and it covers some of the more common Jazz styles such as block chord, stride etc. However it is noteably poor in its discussion of improvisation. There is none! Thats pretty poor for a book on Jazz. It also only only covers 'modern voicings' and 'scales and modes' in the last few pages of the book. This book was published in 1980 originally, and what in the authors eyes might have been seen as minority stylings then, are now the standard.

Blues Hanon is one of a series including Jazz Hanon and Boogie-Woogie Hanon. These exercises help develop the skills and techniques needed for playing these particular modern styles of piano. Unlike the classic Hanon exercises which focus on "...agility, independence, strength, and perfect evenness in the fingers as well as suppleness of the wrist..", Blues Hanon introduces patterns encountered in Blues music and assists development of hand shape needed to perform it. There are lots of dotted rhythms (dotted 1/8 + 1/16 note) in these exercises. Also, left-hand extensions including parallel 6ths and 10ths are introduced. Classic Hanon exercises are repetitive, but the Blues Hanon exercises (especially the later ones) sound like actual (simple) performance pieces, which makes practice with these pieces much more pleasurable. Here is how I would compare the three books: Boogie-Woogie--more like drills but still interesting; Blues--slightly more demanding than Boogie-Woogie because of more complex but enjoyable melodies; and Jazz--more difficult because the intervals used are not familiar to the classically trained ear.

I'm only in my 3rd year of piano lessons, but after mostly classical and contemporary lessons, it's nice to branch off into the world of blues, which is what I want to add to my palette of music genres, along with Boogie-Woogie. This book seems harder than the Boogie Woogie Hanon that I already had, I think it might be that timing in blues is tougher. I don't really know yet since I'm not an experienced player. About the book though, and this goes for the Hanon BW as well, I love the way they have set up levels of practice two lines at a time, and obviously they start out easy and each level becomes more difficult. You can practice a level and back up when it gets too hard. Practice that until it gets boring, and so forth. Each practice, and there are about 60 practices, teaches you something different that might be in songs you later play. None of these are actual songs, but valuable lessons. They prepare you for serious blues songs. I would recommend this book even to second year piano students, it teaches you timing, scales, fingering and anything musical. Good Luck.

A real blues Hanon book would be blues licks and scales in multiple keys. It would have left hand /right hand rythym patterns on top of each other in multiple keys. It would be what you expect - Hanon, but for blues.

THAT would be a great book. This is a bunch of short blues compositions. It is NOT a hanon, or even a technique book.

This book has great exercises in Blue style. It is not like the classical Hanon book, so if you're looking for a book like that, you might get disappointed. It shipped quickly and in great condition.

I've now got both "Blues Hanon"s and am disappointed with this one as well in it's own way (see review of the other). By contrast this one is not a Hanon at all by which I mean exercises in all keys each focusing on a specific technical problem, which at least the other one was in format.
This book is more of an introduction to blues piano and has some material of possible value but the "exercises" are essentially a few written out songs that do (to the books credit) focus on a particular technical issue. The songs are in different keys but not even passing mention is made of how to turn them into multi-key exercises.
I'm almost frustrated enough to create my own and I no doubt will create at least as subset for my own use now (...) I will get a little from each of these "Hanons" but I wouldn't recommend either if a "Hanon" is what you seek. This particular book can serve as an intro to blues piano for those in search of such.
