All photos by Dennis Morris. Probably when I started working with Bob Marley. You released a book of photographs from your own early years in the 60s and 70s called Growing Up Black. What was it like growing up black?

All photos by Dennis Morris. Dennis Morris is the Forrest Gump of British pop culture. Gump moved through the world uncannily connecting with the cultural moment: teaching Elvis how to pelvis, phoning in Watergate, inventing jogging. Morris was 11 years old when a chance photo he took of a PLO leader ended up in the Daily Mirror. What was it like growing up black?

Morris’s own recollections of Marley accompany the images, along with quotations from Marley that reveal his thoughts on life, politics and being black in a white man’s world. Together the text and images show a hitherto unseen Bob Marley, offering insights into his life on the road, in the studio, onstage and at home in Jamaica with his family. After Dennis Morris had done several lousy books with no text at all to explain his pictures, I conceived this book, convinced him to let me write it and to do this with me after he'd earned a lot of money with me working on the Complete Bob Marley & the Wailers 1967-1972 JAD series I produced in 1997-1998. I collected his stories, massively completed them as he didn't remember much (to give you an idea, he thought he'd met Bob in 1975 when he really met him in April 1973, and wouldn't admit it although he had pics of the April 73 small Speakeasy Club show!), wrote the book in English, travelled from Paris to London at my own expense to meet his English publisher who promised me some money and a contract, agreed on a deal, foolishly delivered the text without having received the contract because they enormously insisted that I sent it, pretexting they were sending the contract right away for the third time and that they really were in a hurry because they'd hired some top graphic designer especially for the book. Then they never sent the contract and published the book not crediting me for what I did, not asking for permission, not telling me - and not paying me anything. The book is in its sixth reprint now, and I only found out about this outright rip off because of a 2006 edition by a French publisher I'd hooked Dennis Morris with (I knew them because I'd already done a successful book for them). I found out about this French edition because although I wasn't even asked to translate it into French (I'm French, and I'm the original writer!), the French publisher used my name to promote it all over the net in France as my reggae books sell well there, and they knew I was involved with this book just because I had a "thanks" credit on the last page! Of course the French didn't know about me getting ripped off in the first place.
On top of being a cynical, unscrupulous thief, Dennis Morris had gotten violent with me because I wanted to know which pictures he wanted me to write captions for: he wanted me to write the captions out of hundreds of blurry black and white photocopies without letting me know which pictures they were for (he didn't know and didn't care), and he couldn't stand being told this was both absurd and unprofessional. But in the end it was his publisher who lied to me and conned me. So warning: this is a rip off! To sue them would be too much trouble and money spent for what is at stake, but now you know: Dennis Morris the "Rebel" and Plexus are just unscrupulous thieves. So let it be known!

Bob Marley is not only one of the most influential singer/songwriters ever, but he is incredibly photogenic. His songs are as beautiful as he is. Morris' book gives great insight into the man he was, not only through the main component of the book, the photographs, but also the commentary. The pictures are incredibly expressive, showing all of Bob's emotions. Morris' comments are perfectly placed and very well written. Action shots, stills, live shots of concerts...Morris has it all. Though my musical tastes have changed over time, and I expect they will even more as I grow older, Bob Marley will always be, by far, my favorite.

If a man is judged great by what he has done, what of he whose best may still lie ahead? Bob Marley has left a legacy that will lead a nation made of all peoples into greatness. His songs not only describe the path, but encourage us to take it. This pictoral of his life is as close as many can come to the essence of Bob without actually listening to the music. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then Bob's music is a stroll through the Lourve.
