I'm not particularly salacious, but I wish that more of the realities of his personal life had been included here. Maybe because I was raised in the 60's or maybe because I really don't care who someone sleeps with, but totally ignoring Copland's gay life as well as the dementia that eventually clouded his final years seems to be a crushing blow to the ultimate value of this tome. I'm sorry that, for whatever reason, Professor Perlis felt it incumbent to skip over these rather important aspects of Copland's colorful life. Including them, even ex-post facto, would have created a broader and more complete portrait of who the man really was.

I read Volume 1. I kept waiting for an insight, an opinion, something about his music or the music of others, or music in the Western world or pedagogy. Something about his family, friends, colleagues. Copland doesn't give any. He pretty much pleasantly recalls the facts of writing and publishing. He does seem stubborn though. Once he wrote a piece, he never backed off his own self-promotion of that piece. I listened to some of his early works and they just aren't as good as the ones we know so well like Appalachian Spring. I was so bored, I didn't read the second volume and resold both.

It was a gift to read Copland in his own words. Not only was he a genius composer, an articulate teacher, critic, teacher, mentor, but a firm believer in modern American music.
