Original recordings of ragtime music by james p. johnson, eubie blake, max morath, jelly roll morton, and others. If you want to hear some ragtime music, this is a great CD. Some of the recordings are from the original 78 records, and others were remastered from actual piano rolls from those automated player pianos, and the remastering on those particular songs make them sound as if they were recorded yesterday.

The Ragtime Dance (3:12) 02. The Easy Winners (3:12) 0. This album of ragtimes by Scott Joplin, recorded in 1974, was Itzhak Perlman’s first foray beyond the classical repertory, at least on record. The departure proved a successful one and was to be the first of many other such adventures, which also included jazz with André Previn (volume 24) and Oscar Peterson, recordings of Yiddish folk music (volume 38) and film music. Ragtime began life as the preserve of the piano, but in Joplin’s time travelling violinists would often join in with string ensembles known as Serenaders, made up of violinists, guitarists, mandolin players and double bassists.

Scott Joplin & the Age of Ragtime. A small number of ragtime pieces use a musical device called "stop-time" where the rhythmic pattern of the music seems to pause for a few bars before generally resuming. In his "Rag-Time Dance" (subtitled "A Stop Time Two Step" and published in 1902), Scott Joplin introduces stop-time towards the end of the piece. The left-hand rhythm stops and Joplin indicates in his score that the pianist should stamp the heel of one foot to maintain the beat. The halting motion in his "Rag-time Dance" was used to good effect on the soundtrack to "The Sting".
