Publisher: Mel Bay Publications, Inc. (July 1, 2001). I had very high hopes upon initially reading John E. Lawrence's 'Walking Bass Solos for Guitar'. It got straight to the point with some useful, no nonsense concepts and diagrams. However, I slowly began noticing some mistakes. ISBN-13: 978-0786635313. Product Dimensions: . x . x 1. inches. Shipping Weight: 4 ounces. I had initially found some errors that annoyed me only on a technical picky level as an educator, like the author saying that a major scale is made of 8 notes (major scales are made of 7 notes with the first note repeated at the top).

The modern electric bass guitar patterns presented here are designed to teach the student guitarist and bassist the basics of playing effective "walking bass line" accompaniment for instrumentalists and vocalists. This is a no-nonsense book that gets quickly to the heart of the matter. It would best be appreciated by the intermediate to advanced student already familiar with the fundamentals of electric bass guitar technique. Written in notation and tablature, Walking Bass provides a thorough grounding in chord theory as applied to the electric bass. The accompanying CD recording is very helpful in grasping the aural concepts presented in the book.

I sight read and play bass because I believe that it's healthy to use your brain. I have played various musical instruments starting in elementary school in the late 1960s. I have an above average understanding of music theory. I'm not really interested in creating my own walking bass lines as so many books about walking bass assume. This book gives you many different patterns to play behind several different chords. I don't know if I'll ever get around to using these patterns to back up myself on guitar or back up somebody else, but it might be fun. And practicing these patterns in every key might be good training for your ears as far as being able to play with another musician in a spontaneous manner. For me, this book is a little more than what I was looking for but I'm very happy about the direction this book is taking me. For me, playing these patterns is fun!

Awesome technique book

Pretty boring walking bass lines and the timing is sometimes off. Sounds like a guitarist playing bass. A much better Book/CD is Ed Friedland's "Building Walking Bass Lines", which I also own.
