Water is an important compositional feature for any artist, and this guide to the technique of painting water in watercolours covers every aspect of water painting - from seas and harbours, to lakes, rivers and streams. Using stage-by-stage examples, the author demonstrates the initial stage of painting still water, through the handling of ripples and waves, and finally to stormy seas. His approach is to integrate these new skills of water painting into successful landscapes, and also how to capture the banksides, vales, cliffs, harbours and boats which complete a waterside landscape.

In other cases, such as the Cities of Canterbury and Lancaster, the status extends over a number of towns and rural areas outside the main settlement proper. Scottish towns irregularly applied the description to themselves, but were formally organised as royal burghs; the special rights of these were preserved by Article XXI of the Treaty of Union which established the single state of Great Britain in 1707. Edinburgh and Glasgow were confirmed as cities "by ancient usage" in the 18th century, as was Aberdeen, and this was. later reconfirmed in the Act enlarging the burgh in 1891.

Aimed at those who wish to paint urban scenes, this book covers the basics of materials, equipment, perspective and composition, and goes on to discuss the variety of light, colour and texture to be found in any town or city. It offers advice on portraying, in watercolour, oils and acrylics, the character and atmosphere of a place as they change according to weather, season and time of day, and the author explains how he set out to capture the essence of Vancouver (Canada), Cambridge (England) and Boston (USA) on painting visits to those three places. He also discusses the different techniques and styles of a gallery of other artists who specialize in townscapes.

The paintings in this book are inspirational. The brief details of how to layout your painting, considerations for composition, perspective, overcome problems in reference materials, etc. are just adequate for my needs. I would recommend this book for any aspiring artist who wants to create art of towns & cities.
