Ginger Rogers (born Virginia Katherine McMath; July 16, 1911 – April 25, 1995) was an American actress, dancer, and singer. She won an Academy Award for her starring role in Kitty Foyle (1940), but is best remembered for performing during the 1930s in RKO's musical films (partnered with Fred Astaire). Her career continued on stage, radio, and television throughout much of the 20th century.

Ginger sparkles with Ginger Rogers's wry, sometimes offbeat sense of humor and glows with her warmth and humanity. Once, to land a role, Rogers invented the persona of the aristocratic British actress "Lady Ainsley" - costar Katharine Hepburn was not amused. Ginger Rogers is an entertainment legend. She has danced her way into the hearts of millions and has starred in both comedy and drama on both stage and screen. Now, for the first time, she tells her story. My mother told me I was dancing before I was born", Ginger Rogers writes. Born in Independence, Missouri, in 1911, she debuted in vaudeville at age fourteen.

I've always loved Ginger Rogers in her most famous role as Fred Astaire's dance partner, but I wanted to know more about the woman behind the dances.

As the exquisite film partner of Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers danced her way. I've always loved Ginger Rogers in her most famous role as Fred Astaire's dance partner, but I wanted to know more about the woman behind the dances. She was a hard-working woman (73 movies made) and thoroughly enjoyed her life.

This book starts out very interesting. The part about her parents and how her mother raised her was really interesting. It's stays interesting for quite a while, but after about half way through, it gets boring. It's really too much detail about every movie she's been in. I'm struggling to finish it. I am glad I read the first part. The writing is very good.

Ginger was a lady. She doesn’t dish (the closest she comes is Ruby Keeler). She is reticent about her several failed marriages. There is a zone of privacy. Even so, it’s a great read for Gingerphiles. She was a hard-working pro and is respectful of her famous, if diffifent, dance partner (although she describes a kiss in the back of a taxicab with Fred that wouldn’t make it past.the Hays Office!

In the end, this is Ginger’s story (which covers far more than her film career) written by her, about things she was willing to share. Don’t judge it by any other standards and you’ll not only learn something about her, but a lot about making movies (and the damage feathers can cause).

The book was excellent. As a Las Vegas musician, I played for her at the Sands Hotel a few times. She was very gracious and spent time talking with me after rehearsals. The book revealed many things about her and her career that I didn't know. Her long time rehearsal pianist Hal Borne told me many " inside" stories about her and Fred Astaire. He had played rehearsal piano for all their 10 movies.
Her career and life story is amazing. She lived in the best era of show biz and rose to the top in all aspects of the entertainment business.
I would heartily recommend this book to anyone who is interested in show biz history and the stars who made Hollywood famous. Her all around versatility never fails to amaze me. She also was a beautiful lady....and that didn't hurt either!

Being an autobiography there is always a little more of interest since you are getting it from the "hoofers" mouth. Ginger touches on all her life from early kidnap by her birth father and subsequent re-theft by her mother right up to her musical directing late in life. There is lots of backstory on her movies and relationship with Fred Astaire. Mostly it focuses on her long relationship with her mother, Christian Scientist, and her five husbands. Unfortunately you feel bad for a non-drinker who managed to marry three men who drank to excess and that sadly she did not have any long, happy relationship aside from that of her mother. She does however manage to say mostly good things about people unlike other celebrities, and typically says that doing most of her movies was a joy and that people got along well. She also has some nice humorous stories from the set and insight into other hollywood icons like Cary Grant and others. A nice book on a great talent.
