Full Metal Jacket is definitely one of Stanley Kubrick's Masterpiece works. Going back to as far as 1976, when Kubrick started to work on a Holocaust film and wanted to get the Nobel prize-winning Issac Bashevis Singer of Enemies: A Love Story to write the screenplay for him.

After Full Metal Jacket, however, the Holocaust still lingered in Kubrick’s mind, and in the early 1990s the director came very close to making Aryan Papers, an adaptation of Louis Begley‘s Wartime Lies, about a young Polish Jewish woman and her nephew who take up identities as Catholics to avoid persecution by the Nazis. Like Herr, Gustav Hasford had been a reporter in Vietnam, although one attached to the Marine Corp. After returning, Hasford moved in science fiction-writing circles, publishing stories and even sharing an apartment with Harlan Ellison at one point, before writing his Vietnam novel The Short Timers.

THIS PHOTO/SCREENPLAY IS PERFECTLY PRESENTED. GREAT PHOTOS FROM THE MOVIE AND THE COMPLETE VERBIAGE. EXACTLY AS OFFERED. THE FORWARD IS VERY INFORMATIVE, ESPECIALLY TO EITHER A MOVIE BUFF OR AN ASPIRING AUTHOR. AS A RESULT, I FOLLOWED UP AND OBTAINED WRITER GUSTAV HASFORD'S OTHER 2 BOOKS, PHANTOM BLOOPER AND A GYPSY GOODTIME. NEITHER WERE UP TO F M J'S LEVEL. THIS PICTURE BOOK IS PERFECT AND DELIVERS THE MOVIE WELL. A RARE OCCASION WHEN THE MOVIE IS BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL WRITTEN BOOK!

I loved this book. Stanley Kubick pull no punches in revealing what Marine Corps Boot Camp Was Like in Late 1960's. I was drafted in the Marine Corps in Dec 1968 and endured all the physical abuse practices that the DI's used to train recruits. I was poor in physical fitness, marching and shooting a rifle. I was constanting being hit in the head and stomach, chock in the neck, and several attempts to push me over the stair case rails at the rifle range. I felt no glory being drafted into the Marine Corps. I felt I was a in Japanese POW camp in ww2 where the POW's was being punish for slightest offense. I when to boot camp in San Diego where lot of recruit training was expose to general public. It was in the restricted areas were the abuses train methods took place. It was ten times worse at Paris Island because it was close island to general public. Anybody who tells you being hit make a better soldier of you is not telling the truth. No body liked it. Ex don't care MARINE

Read the "Short Timers", by Gustav Hasford. It's what FMJ is based on and it's better. The final part of the book isn't even in the movie.
Burilar
Kubrick either bought into a falsehood or twisted things to make Marine Corps boot camp at PI appear much worse than it actually is ( at least in my personal experience ). I don't believe my Senior DI, the inimitable SSGT, J. D. Perkins, would have laid a hand on any of us " prives" if someone had a gun to his head. I never witnessed one single incident of physical abuse during my stay at PI. Sure, he PTed the hell out of us when we screwed up, but he never once touched one of us in anger. R.Lee Ermey sold out the Corps for moolah when he played Gunnery Sgt, Hartman in the movie. Also, the fact that he was a Gunnery Sgt. And a Senior DI doesn't jive in my experience. I never saw one DI at PI with a rank higher than SSGT. Ermey should be completely ostracized by anyone who loves the Marine Corps. And he has gone on to grub more money up for his part in the movie by being the well-paid spokesman for all kinds of stuff. " Gunny-approved gear" is a big fat crock of crap designed to line his pockets at the expense of the Corps. He's not a real Marine. A real Marine would never present a false, negative image of the Corps as he has!
