Photographing Buildings Inside and Out: This reference covers the fundamentals of photographing residential, commercial, and public spaces. Updated with new photographs and the latest information on equipment and business practices. Norman McGrath, our friend. While McGrath is likely to look outdated for the age of the interiors and examples of architecture, this will feel dated soon for it's technical tutorials.

We (the college where I teach and I) bought this to teach a class in architectural photography we are developing in our new curriculum. It was ecommended to me by a trusted colleague as pretty much "the bible of architectural photography." It's a great book. We will only be using it as a reference and for lecture content, though; not for requiring it as text, since it unfortunately does not cover digital and abounds in film theory. However, personally, I don't mind that it doesn't cover digital, that's merely technical and easy to find in Youtube. But the book is full of expertise and very strong in style of composition and use of light in different situations. Our other candidates were Schulz's "Architectural Photography" (also to be used as reference) and James Ewing's "Follow the Light," which we found to be the most accessible and complete for 101 architectural photography. But the three books complement each other. If I could have the students read more than one as required, I'd take all three.

This book....is largely useless.

Then , yes, this book is not a step by step, how to, recipe like book, but advises, tips and trick abound, nonetheless. You just need to read slowly, and follow the author in his presentation.
By "reading slowly" Norman does share a lot of insights, secrets, howtos, etc. but there are not obviously highlighted. The gems are scattered in plain text.

The only downside is that the book is not current with 2008 digital photography.

So, i do hope we'll have a new edition coming soon.

Although this book was written pre digital era it's a great resource to have. I own a design company and need to photographically record our work. It's been a great help.
The Rollers of Vildar
some classic knowledge on how to prepare for and shoot architecture.... a must read for a serious student of architecture/real estate photography.

My photography professor suggested this book to help me get a better idea of how to take this kind of photograph. So far all I can do is admire the photos.

There are nuggets or crumbs in the book.

And if you want to know how it was like
predigital...this is the book.

But!

Overall it has very little value to digital photography.
Norman McGrath's PHOTOGRAPHING BUILDINGS INSIDE AND OUT (2ND EDITITON) is an excellent source for information. While view cameras are the way to go, they are not always the most convienient. McGrath discusses equipment selection - camera, lenses, tripods, heads, meters, filters and film. His case studies (taken from his portfolio) show a body of work and what was done to due to the existing conditions: tight spaces, different light temperatures, auxiliary lighting, etc. He also discussed different perspectives of the same room/building, as well as prop suggestions to complement the subject.
It has been said that "Architecture is in the details" so, too, is it with photography. His "numerous case studies to illustrate his methods and techniques... clearly explains his objectives for each shoot and demonstrates how, with attention to the smallest deatails, he achieves successful results every time." (Excerpt taken from the back cover.)
As a designer, I found it very helpful in photographing my own work for my portfolio as well as capturing the spirit of the place. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in photographing architecture and/or interiors for fun or profit.
