Book by Harling, Robert. What Englsh House and Garden however, did in the 1980s and 1990's, was chronicle the results of refined English tastemakers, in a series of hard cover volumes, drawing from material from their magazines. To my eye, decades now later, these interiors still resonate and reflect the sophisticated eye and cultivation of their creators and or patrons. Having them collected in hardcover means that their legacy will survive my increasingly ragged collection of magazines from the same era. These are interiors with soul, that show the stamp of humanity and human creativity at every step.

Architect Jonathan Rhind and designer Nicola Harding have helped restore the spirit of an eighteenth-century house in Bath that had been a hotchpotch of student rooms, adding characterful furniture and clever combinations of colour. See Harding & Read's latest house in our June issue, out now. By Elfreda Pownall. Jane Austen made it clear in her novels that the smartest place to live in Bath was at the top of the hill. In 1790, when the architect John Eveleigh designed the handsome crescent where Nick and Catherine Gilpin’s house is set, it was so far.
The traditional drawing room is the heart of the home and also a room in which aesthetic preferences and individuality of taste can be indulged and satisfied. This book contains chapters on the general character and disposition of the drawing room and how to combine comfort and elegance. There are chapters on important design elements such as lighting, the hanging of paintings, the choice and groupings of favourite objects, the use of colour, curtains and pelmets, friezes, cornices and ceiling treatments as well as classic, gothic and rural drawing room design.
There were books instead of walls – in bookcases as long as the bookcases lasted and then overflowing into piles and toppling columns. There were stacks of box files, too, labelled long ago with dusty labels on which the ink had faded into obscurity, like invisible writing that refuses to be reanimated. And there were great mountains of paper, yellowing articles with titles like ‘Kinship Structure among the Baganda’. Clare, putting the tray down on the table by the sofa, thought: I am also the only person I know who has spears on their walls instead of pictures.
