These black and white, almost classically composed, portraits of minor league players are brilliant character studies which constantly surprise the viewer. They show friendship and athleticism, a competitive spirit and, yes, eroticism. They are magnificent.

I was honored to be among several photographers invited to choose an image to write about from the collection of Ralph Eugene Meatyard’s work in the book Stages of Being, published by the University of Kentucky Art Museum in Lexington. Text from the book: The reach of Meatyard’s influence over the years is so vast, it’s sometimes hard to remember how truly inventive his photography was at that time.
