David Litschel is the Provost of Brooks Institute of Photography.

Glenn Rand received his Bachelor and Master of Arts from Purdue University with a Doctorate from the University of Cincinnati. Publications include many articles, several books for industry and "Black and White Photography 2e," with co-author David Litschel. His consultant clients have included the Eastman Kodak Company, Ford Motor Company, Photo Marketing Association International, the Ministry of Education of Finland as well as many other businesses and several colleges. David Litschel is the Provost of Brooks Institute of Photography.

Very good, in-depth coverage of digital photography. Illustrations are very helpful as well that show the way in which the digital cameras work.

Dr's Rand, Litschel, and Davis have written an outstanding, definitive text which should be mandatory reading for everyone making the switch to digital. The authors successfully guide the reader through ten chapters discussing the technicalities of digital image sensors, lens basics, image output, exposure basics, and file formats just to mention a few. There is enough detail here to satisfy even the most keen minded.

The authors start each chapter with a brief overview of the chapters contents and define key photographic terms in the side margins as the chapter unfolds. Additonally, the text is illustrated with detailed visual color schematics reinforcing the points made by the authors in each chapter. Finally, the authors wrap up each chapter with a brief summation and include an extensive list of chapter terms. There is also some great photography in each chapter also!

The authors are to be commended for guiding the reader to a technical understanding and focusing on information that is fundamental to digital imaging both past, present and future.

This book should be in the library of anyone curious about what goes on under the hood of their digital camera. Yes, it is technical but not so technical that a beginner could not understand it. A must read! Highly Recommended!

Road.to sliver

Once you begin reading Glenn Rand's fascinating, attractive book, you start to realize how much you didn't know about digital imaging and what's going on inside the digital camera you just bought. It's not an essential read for using your camera, but it's essential if you insist on understanding what is becoming one of the most valuable and most important technical advances of the last century and this one. In my own writing, I found myself turning again and again to Digital Photographic Capture for authoritative inforamtion on the technical esoterica of photography.
