In Alissa Nutting’s novel Tampa, Celeste Price, a smoldering 26-year-old middle-school teacher in Florida, unrepentantly recounts her elaborate and sociopathically determined seduction of a 14-year-old student. Celeste has chosen and lured the charmingly modest Jack Patrick into her web. Jack is enthralled and in awe of his eighth-grade teacher, and, most importantly, willing to accept Celeste’s terms for a secret relationship-car rides after dark, rendezvous at Jack’s house while his single father works the late shift, and body-slamming erotic encounters in Celeste’s empty classroom.

The Beeson Collection was begun in 1946 and consists of roughly 1400 pieces, assembled through purchases at auction, from dealers and other collectors, in addition to two major collections. In 1975 the entire collection was donated to the Birmingham Museum of Art (Alabama), where it is exhibited in a special gallery. This collection concentrates mainly on the huge range of wares from the Josiah Wedgwood and Thomas Bentley partnership period (1769-80) and reveals the development of Wedgwood pottery from the red stoneware produced in the 1760s to the work of Emile-Aubert Lessore produced in the 1870s. The book itself is an exposition of the social history of the 18th century and contains detailed descriptions of the wares and manufacturing techniques at the Wedgwood works. Josiah Wedgwood is portrayed as an energetic Renaissance man who made many different types of pottery as well as many technical contributions to the pottery industry and to English society. In his numerous letters to his partner Thomas Bentley, who controlled the London end of the trade, all manner of life is revealed. Rising from modest beginnings Josiah became one of the wealthiest men in England, acquiring en route a wide knowledge of the arts, science, chemistry and physics. Always interested in new inventions, he was one of the many English artists who ushered in neoclassicism; he created Jasper ware to capture the pastel colours used by the architects Adam and James Wyatt, and instituted many innovations in the manufacture of both pottery and porcelain throughout his notable career. This volume contains virtually everything the aspiring collector needs to know about the vast range of wares and designs produced by Wedgwood.

This is the second copy of this book that I have purchased; the first was for myself many years ago, this second copy is to be a gift for a friend who collects old Wedgwood. The book is a great source of useful information, an excellent well-notated reference of other useful resources, and the photographs of collection items are superb.
Obviously the majority of the book will be taken up with the love affair that the Beeson duo conducted with Wedgwood wares, but like the Society for Seminars they founded, the collection is not confined to Wedgwood. Contemporaries, copyists and plagiarists are also covered really well so there is a coherent context for the Wedgwood products.
The author has impeccable credentials in ceramic publishing having written books on Bow and Chelsea so the text is flowing and informative. Although the book is essentially a guide to the contents donated to the museum, other publishers and curators could do well to model their catalogues after this example.
Lots of illustrations, many in colour, lists of subjects, an extensive bibliography and full index make this the best volume on Wedgwood products up to the third quarter of the 19th century. The most recent ceramics are by Lessore so there are no fairyland lustre wares shown, but they really deserve a book of their own or should comprise half a volume on twentieth century Wedgwood.
This book together with the 'Dictionary of Wedgwood' would cater for all your needs on the subject at hand.
I purchased this book at a magnificent Wedgwood show at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. This is a wonderful reference for anyone interested in Wedgwood as art. There are several interesting articles on how the company was established and how they developed their craft in pottery. The articles include discussion of major pieces made by the company, and their various types of pottery.

The second half of the book is a catalog of over a thousand works. They have a black & white photograph, a description, provenance, marks, and more on each of the pieces.

If you want to get into understanding Wedgwood in a serious way this is an essential resource in your education.
One of the BEST reference books on Wedgwood yet. This book is basically a pictorial inventory of all the items that are part of the Beeson Collection located at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the largest single collection of Wedgwood outside of the UK. A wonderful book with lots of superb color and black and white photos, and descriptions of all the major categories of ware, including Jasperware, Basalt, Caneware etc.
As an avid collector, I rely on seeing the actual identification marks (the curve of the impressions, the case, etc.), not just a description, for each piece. Otherwise I would have rated the book 5 stars. I do think the authors could have provided more photographs of the identification marks, including all the variations.
