A. Manette Ansay, the author of such well-received novels as Midnight Champagne and River Angel, didn't set out to be a writer, but a concert pianist.

Manette Ansay (born 1964) is an American author. She was born in Lapeer, Michigan. When she was five, her family moved to Port Washington, Wisconsin, where she graduated from Port Washington High School in 1982. Read This and Tell Me What It Says (1995). Midnight Champagne (1999). Good Things I Wish You (2009). Vinegar Hill was chosen as an Oprah's Book Club selection November 1999.

Manette Ansay ("Ann") grew up in a small Midwestern town, brought up in the Catholic faith and passionate about the piano. By the time Ann is accepted into the prestigious Carnegie college however, not only is her religious faith taking a knock, but the pains in her arms and legs are worsening, and becoming resistant to the treatments she had been using (such as ice baths for her wrists after heavy practice sessions). At Carnegie the unwritten motto is "no pain, no gain", and injury is expected and expected not to interfere with the gruelling practice schedules. In this memoir, Ann writes about her paralysing illness and how it shaped her life as a writer.
