Published July 9, 2006 by Kessinger Publishing, LLC Keokuk Sauk chief (1780?-1840), Black Hawk Sauk chief (1767-1838).

Black Hawk or Black Sparrow Hawk (Sauk Makataimeshekiakiak) (1767-1838) was a leader and warrior of the Sauk American Indian tribe in what is now the United States. Although he had inherited an important historic medicine bundle, he was not a hereditary civil chief of the Sauk, but was an appointed war chief. He was generally known in English as Black Hawk. During the War of 1812, he fought on the side of the British. After the War ended, he signed a peace treaty in 1816 that re-affirmed the treaty of 1804, a provision of which he later protested ignorance. Later he led a band of Sauk and Fox warriors against settlers in Illinois and present-day Wisconsin in the 1832 Black Hawk War. After the war he was captured and taken to the eastern U. S. where he and other British Band leaders toured several cities.

Fascinating look into the history of US government / Native American during the early 1800s in what was then the "west". Yes, a good look at Black Hawk himself but also good insight into other Indian Chiefs, society, relationships with other tribes and frontier settlers. As this book was written in the mid-1800s, first hand material makes this even more valuable in understanding this era and frontier settlement, movement, and how that affected Native Americans and how they reacted. This was an especially meaningful to me as I grew up in Black Hawk's territory, heard his stories, and visited his statue on the Rick River many times which, by the way, in being renovated today.

For me at first the book gave the background throughout the years and bounced back and forth with many years it covered... At the end I got on the computer and follow the dates, cities, forts, and battles which maded it very intresting..... Thank-you

interesting accounts of Black Hawk and early to mid 19th century settlers and government interactions in the upper mid-west. Written within living memory of many of the events in the life of Black Hawk, the accounts provide insights into the attitudes and actions of the US settlers in the northwest territories, US government and military officers, British forces, and Indian tribes in the northwest. I found it fascinating since I live in Wisconsin where Black Hawk and others in this book left their marks. Depth that we typically never encounter in history classes in school.

Easy to read and good information about Black Hawk. It's a must read for history buffs. When you read this book have your Illinois and Iowa map nearby so you can track Black Hawk's travels.

A time in American / native history which is generally forgotten or misunderstood and ,in this book, clearly and interestingly discussed.

I live in the area where Blackhawk lived and died. Some very interesting history about the area. Shame on our government for its mistreatment of people like Blackhawk.
