This powerful autobiography of one of the greatest American political figures is eye opening in letting us see past the stereotypes into exactly what life was like for Barbara Jordan. The book is often downplayed because it contradicts attempts to co-opt this very conservative Democrat into some of today's political games. I found it engrossing and have kept it as a permanent part of my library. So much of it is told in her own words, and it sometimes feels as though we are getting to sit and listen to her. We in the South knew and loved her long before she rose to national prominence for her role in the Watergate Hearings as a passionate defender of the US Constitution. Despite her physical illnesses that eventually confined her to a wheelchair and caused her untimely death, Congresswoman Barbara Charlene Jordan promoted true colorblind equality and Americanization right up to the end of her life.

This book is poorly written and difficult to follow. Since Jordan is quoted and also writes portions one is not always sure if we're reading Jordan or Hearon.
