The Patagonia Hare book. Claude Lanzmann is a French filmaker and genius

The Patagonia Hare book. Claude Lanzmann is a French filmaker and genius. Claude Lanzmann certainly thinks so. While he's led an undeniably rich and interesting life, and was good friends with a number of fascinating and famous intellectuals and public figures, the over-riding, ego-maniacal self-regard was KILLING me.

The Patagonian Hare is his autobiography, and the book makes clear that . Translated by Frank Wynne.

The Patagonian Hare is his autobiography, and the book makes clear that pratfalls in a distinctly cinematic style - a car crash, an overturned boat, Alpine hiking disasters, a run-in with a plate-glass window - have punctuated his life the way skin rashes might announce the anxieties of someone more conventionally neurotic. This was not for Lanzmann (nor does Lanzmann seem to adore Spielberg, whose name appears in The Patagonian Hare in studiously cool tones). Lanzmann was intent on filming the main thing, and not anything marginal - the main thing being the extermination of a people, in his phrase.

In Britain, Claude Lanzmann is known predominantly as the director of Shoah, the monument to the memory of the Holocaust. But in France, his name evokes an era. He was a member of the resistance at 15, a central figure at Jean-Paul Sartre's magazine Les Temps modernes, a lover of Simone de Beauvoir and an intimate of everyone who mattered in French left-wing political and philosophical life, from Gilles Deleuze to Frantz Fanon. Auschwitz and other camps were liberated and in his film Lanzmann reconstructed the horror. But the Gulag, or the laogai in China - who in 1950s and 1960s Paris wanted to know?

The international bestseller: a cry of witness to the 20th century – the unforgettable memoir of 70 years of contemporary and personal history from the great French filmmaker, journalist and intellectual Claude Lanzmann. I must have been no more than ten years ol. Born to a Jewish family in Paris, 1925, Lanzmann's first encounter with radicalism was as part of the Resistance during the Nazi occupation.

Claude Lanzmann's brilliant memoir has been widely acclaimed as a masterpiece, was hailed as "a true literary and historic event" in the pages of Le Monde, and was awarded the prestigious Welt-Literaturpreis in Germany. I have written a lot, pen in hand, throughout my life. This is because I have experienced a strange and, I believe, somewhat rare adventure.

'The guillotine - and capital punishment and other diverse methods of dispensing death more generally - have been the abiding obsessions of my life. It began very early. I must have been no more than ten years old...' Born to a Jewish family in Paris, 1925, Lanzmann's first encounter with radicalism was as part of the Resistance during the Nazi occupation. He and his father were soldiers of the underground until the end of the war, smuggling arms and making raids on the German army. After the liberation of France, he studied philosophy at the Sorbonne, making money as a student in surprising ways (by dressing as a priest and collecting donations, and stealing philosophy books from bookshops). It was in Paris however, that he met Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir. It was a life-changing meeting. The young man began an affair with the older de Beauvoir that would last for seven years. He became the editor of Sartre's political-literary journal, Les Temps Modernes - a position which he holds to this day - and came to know the most important literary and philosophical figures of postwar France. And all this before he was thirty years old... Written in precise, rich prose of rare beauty, organized - like human recollection itself - in interconnected fragments that eschew conventional chronology, and describing in detail the making of his seminal film Shoah, The Patagonian Hare becomes a work of art, more significant, more ambitious than mere memoir. In it, Lanzmann has created a love song to life balanced by the eye of a true auteur.

For any student of France during the Occupation and of the terrifying history of the Holocaust and how the author's amazing film "Shoah" came into existence due to one man's intense determination. Not a light-hearted read, but totally gripping.

It's well written, he's crammed a lot in one lifetime (not over yet), his opinions on the struggle for Algerian independence are insightful and he takes us "behind the scenes of his masterpiece Shoah. That alone would be sufficient for another book.

Am interesting life. An extraordinary vitality. A surprise. From the French Resistance to the filming of SHOAH. Sometimes bully in his opinions. Biased but, acceptable. He has gone through the Shoah experience. What can you expect of somebody who put on his shoulders the ashes of his People?
