Great book .. valuable information .. Would have 5 stared it if not for troublesome ebook transposing errors (Hider for Hitler, greedy instead of greatly & lastly Busby in place of by) which after a while we're beyond annoying and painful.

If you like history and presidential things, this is a book for you. Only a third through, but its great. Recommended for those who question the influence of FDR. Really insightful.

Professor Leuchtenburg is uniquely qualified to connect the dots between Franklin Roosevelt and his successors. He wrote the 900 page history of American presidents from Teddy Roosevelt to Bill Clinton, and has won most of the major awards for American history. But this history, which attempts to connect the dots between FDR and each of his successors up to Barrack Obama, seems forced and ultimately flat. Yes, many of FDR’s policies have found echoes in later administrations, particularly those of Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, Lyndon Johnson and part of Bill Clinton’s eight years. But the further American history moves away from Roosevelt’s magnificent presidency the more the major programs of more recent presidents seem to be their own responses in their own times to the most important social and economic issues.

This should not be surprising. America is a different country than it was during the presidency of Franklin Roosevelt. The economy is now part of a global economy and does not have the advantages over most other developed nations that were so increasingly clear during FDR’s presidency. We are now a nation of great diversity, with many different points of view and a vastly different population.

To this reader, these differences make the discussion of FDR’s impact on today’s leaders increasingly tenuous and unsatisfactory. Professor Leuchtenburg searches with great energy for mentions of FDR by his subsequent presidents. And he finds an occasional reference but this does not seem convincing evidence of the continued prominence of FDR in national debates. Not surprisingly, the further our nation moves from FDR’s presidency, the less often references to him and his policies seem.
