The first commanding general of the famed Irish Brigade during the American Civil War and post-war de-facto governor of Montana Territory until his mysterious death in 1867, Meagher's career remains as controversial today as it was during his own life time. One of the finest republican orators of his day, Meagher has recently been honoured by a new heroic statue in the city of his birth, Waterford, Ireland. In this new academic study scholars from three continents fully chronicle the various aspects of Meagher's often colourful and mercurial career.

The General and his Irish Brigade ended the war among the highest casualty rates of any unit of the war and the terrible price his men paid weighed heavily on Meagher's mind. But as the General begins to drink more heavily and his career turns to politics the writer delves deeper into the detail of Meagher's last year. The author is a lawyer from Montana so the detail into this part of the General's life is probably expected, but Meagher's final year is certainly not the highlight of his life, nor of this book.

Thomas Francis Meagher (/ˈmɑːr/; 3 August 1823 – 1 July 1867) was an Irish nationalist and leader of the Young Irelanders in the Rebellion of 1848

Thomas Francis Meagher (/ˈmɑːr/; 3 August 1823 – 1 July 1867) was an Irish nationalist and leader of the Young Irelanders in the Rebellion of 1848. In 1852, Meagher escaped and made his way to the United States, where he settled in New York City. He studied law, worked as a journalist, and traveled to present lectures on the Irish cause.

Текст песни Rory Murphy - The Irish Rovers. He cheered the heart of sage and sire. And made the listening groups admire. The piper of Dumbarton. Saw ye Rory Murphy, Rory Murphy, Rory Murphy. Saw ye Rory Murphy coming frae Dumbarton. Now Rory was a piper bold. Highland blood with in him flowed. And lowland bodies hearts aye glowed. To the tunes of Rory Murphy. As he gaed through Dumbarton.

Romantic Young Irelander, republican revolutionary, father of the Irish tricolour and political exile, Thomas Francis Meagher became a citizen of the United States and a leading ethnic spokesman in his adopted republic. In tracing his ancestral origins from the sixteenth century Irish midlands to his present day descendants in California, this original study vividly portrays the Irish, Australian and American influences on Meagher's career, a career marked by frustrated hope and unfilled ambition. If something of a glorious failure, Meagher helped shape the destiny of his adopted republic and changed forever the perception on the Irish in the New World. This monograph is an important addition to nineteenth century trans-Atlantic community studies and Irish studies generally.
