Vitalis interrogates an elderly Jewish fisherman called Peter, who many years earlier had been a close friend of a man known as Jesus-the same Jesus condemned to death in Jerusalem by Pontius Pilate. Loyal to the emperor, Vitalis determines to do everything in his power to expose the truth around this strange new religious sect before it undermines Roman rule. So it is, through the course of interrogation between veteran soldier and detainee, that a story emerges that will shake the very foundations of the Roman Empire.

I ordered this book because I live in Gloucester and I am interested in nearly everything that has to do with the history here but this book has turned out to be a little treasure. Salve Testaverde, who authored the book, wrote it originally in 1985 and it has since been republished by his family. His writing style is straightforward and unpretentious but charming. He has a fresh, breezy story-telling style and he has a terrific story to tell.

He starts out as a boy in a growing but poor Italian family in the North End of Boston in the twenties and takes the reader through his life as a fisherman from the time he was little more than a boy into his later years. Along the way he tells the story of a fishing town --- Gloucester --- and the development of a community of Sicilian immigrants with all their problems, joys, traditions and challenges.

I particularly loved his chapter about the first Fiesta. Fiesta has become an annual tradition here in Gloucester but reading about the first Fiestas and how they evolved was delightful.

There is plenty of adventure in battling storms at sea and a few storms in port too. Most of the names in the book are familiar to me but even if you are not from Gloucester this book is a lovely chronicle of the lives and challenges of fishing families and immigrants. He gives clear, uncomplicated explanations of fishing methods and how they are practiced. His commentary on his family and friends is warm and delightful and his final chapters about the loss of his wife are so tender.

This is just a wonderful little book --- warm, funny, fascinating and a pleasure to read.

Salve Testaverde is an excellent storyteller, and recounts his personal history of commercial fishing and family in the last century in Boston, Gloucester, and along the Atlantic Coast. With humor, love, and self-awareness, he recounts his long life of hard work at sea, raising and providing for a family, weaving in the history of immigrant Sicilian fishermen. His optimism in the face of bad luck, the Depression, wartime, poverty, and illness shines through. For those readers without a fishing background, a helpful glossary is included in the back. I would have liked to read another 200 pages of stories from this authentic, talented voice.

It's truly amazing how much technology is now available, but at the time this,in the 20's and 30's fishermen had only a simple compass to use on the boat. This book is an account of the history of commercial fishing in New England and the story of one Sicilian
fishing family.
