I moved to Peru in 2008, have since married into the country and gone down the rabbit hole of history. While I have a good handle on the republican evolution of Peru, this is the best modern history capturing everything from the 1950s through the time of publish, soon after President Alberto Fujimori's "autocoup."

Not only history and politics but a treasure trove of economic insight into the country from the man who could be described as Peru's neoliberal, capitalist conscience. I had read several of Vargas Llosa's books but this one is rarely cited. I'm glad I found it, and it instantly earned a top spot on my recommended reading list for other expats in Peru.

Simply perfect

I got this for an Honors politics class about writers who became politicians and the reverse; did they do well or not? It was an interesting class and this book is fairly interesting too, but it's not my choice of recreational reading. The book arrived in good condition and packing.

This book should be in everyone's reading list

A Fish In The Water is a fascinating book that works on many levels,

as a memoir of an extraordinary childhood

as a portrait of families in transition (his parents', his grandparents', his own) throughout the years,

as a coming of age story

a chronicle of a grueling political campaign

a snapshot of a complex society that for many of us, even those born and raised in Latin America, remains a mystery,

a statement of the author's political beliefs, and their evolution throughout the years,

and as a saga of the writer's beginnings as he evolved to become one of the premier authors of our times.

This candid, at times unflinchingly honest, book rivals some of the outstanding memoirs of or times (such as Speak, Memory, and others) in richness, texture, and quality of detail. The dual structure brings to mind the "vasos comunicantes" of his work in fiction, overlapping the early years with the political campaign. A master of the Spanish language, and of characterization, theme, and plot, Vargas Llosa has earned an eminent place in contemporary literature. This is one of his outstanding works, a diamond among gems.

Fifty years from now, people might not remember who was president of Peru, but I'm willing to bet that in five hundred years from now Mario Vargas Llosa's work will continue to dazzle.

It is stimulating and a bit borind at the same time. The book is divided into two parts. The first part is about the growth of the writer and how he started his literary life. The second part is about his accidental involvement of being the candidancy of the president of Peru. These two parts are twisted together. It is a clever choice. We do not follow his life in just a chronological way. The two distant parts of his life echoed in my mind. It reminded me that the sensitive child and the determined political figure are the same person.
The part interested me most is his start as a professional writer by writing love letters and eroctic novels cor his classmates in cadet. But for the second part, if you are not so interested in politics in Peru, you will find it a little bit hard to read.
If you are his loyal reader, you must find the book interesting. In this book, you can trace the footpath of his fictions from his real life.

Many memoirs have the benefit of allowing us a personal interpretation on events we have observed in the media on a more superficial scale. The main attraction of this memoir is being able to catch a glimpse of the real life events that later shaped Vargas Llosa's amazing fiction. The fact that his early life was the foundation of many of his great works (Conversations in the Cathedral, Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter etc)is perhaps suggestion enough to the avid Vargas Llosa reader that the accounts of his childhood, adolescence and early manhood are sure to be fascinating, and indeed they are.
The stories of his early life are interspersed with his ill fated run for Presidency in Peru much later in his life. Although this section is also well written and offers an insightful if rather bleak view of the politics of the third world it doesn't match the magic and narrative interest of his earlier memoirs.
Overall this book presents a portrait of a wise, humble and compassionate man who struggles to come to terms with his ambivalence for his homeland.

Through the pages of A fish in the water you can navegate into deep Latin American, not only Peruvian, roots. The family, the society, the political system that corrodes even the best intended winds of change by protecting a status quo of paternalism and long time compromises.
An excellent book that you would not want to end...
I would have prefrerred the Spanish original, but my wife, La Santa Wendy, doesn't read Spanish as fluently.........yet....
