Leaving a Doll's House: A Memoir is an autobiography written by British actress Claire Bloom and published in 1996. Bloom writes about her life, career and relationships, including her first marriage to Rod Steiger. The main focus is on her troubled relationship with writer Philip Roth. The title refers to Ibsen's play A Doll's House, in which Bloom had starred on stage and in film as the wife in an oppressive marriage.

Another week, another Physical Book successfully read! We are also 2 for 2 on enjoyment, even if this one is a little uncomfortable at times. It is a special treat for people who love literary feuds. Here are the men Claire Bloom talks about having sex with before Philip Roth shows up: Richard Burton - I felt absolutely no guilt about anything, because I knew that to make love with Richard was something that had to happen.

Claire Bloom's "Leaving a Doll's House" is poignant in its honesty, but a bit underwritten. The first time I reached for my highlighter pen was on page 104, where Bloom describes a distraught Vivien Leigh. Leigh, of course, was the incomparable beauty who portrayed Scarlett O'hara in "Gone with the Wind.

Interesting and entertaining autobiography. Ms. Bloom didn't spare any of the details. My heart ached for her as she told the story of her failed relationships and her love for her family.

As a fan of Bloom's work and also of her ex-Roth's books, I found
Claire's take compelling. I'm certain Mr. Roth was not happy
with her portrait of him. Sadly, still another woman with an ex-husband
obsesson! In fact, her male relationships seem to have side-tracked
her life but thankfully not her career!

This is "Volume 2" of Claire Bloom's memoir about her life....read the earlier book first, for continuity, and then this volume. You won't be disappointed.

I just was reading the most recent of Philip Roth's books, which I adore. I have read everything he's written more than once. Then I decided to open "Leaving a Doll's House" again.

I was taken with how honest is Bloom, and how what others take to be personal vitriol really isn't. It was more fun reading Bloom after Roth. She's not a genius and she gives him plenty of credit for being one, but she is smart and has a great warmth... and is not just dishing about Philip but is telling how it was for her. Is there a woman alive, over 30, who would not totally relate to her hurt? Well done, Ms. Bloom.

Interesting if you want to contrast Roth the man to his literary work. We have no way of knowing the books accuracy since we didn't know and have a relationship with Roth for 18 years; but the woman who wrote this book did. Suffice to say she paints an unflattering picture. Useful if you need an antidote to the hero worship that surrounds Roth the author. Useful as research in comparative literature studies.
It was interesting. I was interested in reading it from a reference in another memoir. It was worth the effort and price.
