A must read for every one to fully appreciate what the police do to serve and protect in our cruelest inner cities. Be prepared to be shocked. I grew up in Saginaw, MI and found myself shocked again and again.

As a law enforcement officer I have to say this book kept my interest peaked as it kept me glued to the story from the innocence of a rookie to the numb expressions of a seasoned cop living in pure hell. Though some of the chapters were a bit short the message was clearly portrayed to those of us who live the streets for a job. Thank you for bringing a true cops life to those who just see us as ticket writing government employees.

Makes me want to do a ride-a-long in a city with this magnitude of violence. Keep safe brother and I give you more credit than you can imagine for sticking it out in a city that would rather spend its money on welfare whores than public saftey.

I purchased this book on a whim, having never read anything in the true-life police genre before. I must say my eyes have been opened to the sides of police work that only an officer can truly see. Officer East tells his story in a straightforward and honest manner. The book teeters between heart-stopping and heart-wrenching, with some comic moments thrown in for good measure. I read it in one sitting, never putting it down once I began reading. A truly amazing read.

East writes a compelling book of vignettes gleaned from his years as a cop in Saginaw. This book could have been written by a cop from any of the "rust belt" cities of the midwest. Job loss leads to dispair, crime, and a loss of hope. The city itself was and is in denial. No tax increases in years have led to a cannibalized police force. Infighting among city officials and an unwillingness to tackle racism have brought the city to the point that the author describes in his writing. I'm not sure if I'd want police recruits to read the book as it is very discouraging. A few typographical errors should have been caught by the editor. The phrase is "trying in vain" rather than "trying in vein", repeated no fewer than 4 times. The outlook for Saginaw is bleak, stark, and dark as shown in this book.

East gives a very honest look into the life of being a police officer. This book kept me interested and always wanting to continue reading just so I could see what type of experiences he would face next. I certainly have a large degree of respect for this man for being able to write the cold hard truth versus glamorizing the career of a police officer.

East's approach to describing his role in policing Saginaw, Michigan is honest and well-written. A great book, but not for the faint of heart--it's a sad book in many parts.

Living in Saginaw, MI can be rather uneasy at time. I can't even imagine what it must be like being a police officer in this town. Thanks for sharing your story Mr. East.
I wouldn't consider this a great book, but it does tell it like it is in a very readable way. It's simply written and somewhat short. I came to Saginaw almost the same time as this officer did, and I think I may have even stayed in the same hotel he mentions in the first chapter and even had a similar experience as he did. I recognize many of the incidents he writes about with much the same emotional response as he had. I clearly remember the prom events as he describes them. If I hadn't witnessed them, I don't think I'd believe what he wrote.

It does give a good feeling of what it's like to be in Saginaw. I can't say I spend much time on his side of Saginaw - the East side - for obvious reasons once you read the book. The despair of the region comes out and you wonder why people like him keep trying to do what they do. If you want to see why Saginaw is the most violent city of size in the nation (according to the 2009 FBI statistics) read this book. If you want to find out what Rust Belt cities can become read this book. By the way, I don't live in Saginaw any more.
