by Adrian Raftery (Author). This book rightfully claims that if you get even one idea from it, then it will have covered its purchase cost. Of course your time to read the book is probably more important than the small purchase cost. I found the book readable and actionable and worth the read. Tax can be complicated and I think this book successfully tackles the complexity by having a few overarching headings like 'your family' or 'your business' and within each of these subjects, it then presents many short 'tips' to minimise your tax.

This is a nice little book that is formatted nicely on the page, making it easy to read, understand and find what you are looking for. Has a lot less high school text book feel to it and doesn't talk to you like you're a moron like a lot of other books on the subject of tax out there. To be honest you're probably going to know most of the information inside, and a lot you'll find on E-tax by clicking on the links, but maybe if you're a teenager who has just become old enough to work and unfortunately pay tax, have bought an investment property or you have just decided to buy shares and don't know how dividends including the difference between franked/unfranked are entered into E-tax you may well rate this book higher than me, simply because it can help you more. For me I was after a few more deductions that maybe I hadn't thought of before, so in that regard it was a bit disappointing. I've come across more deductions in lists, especially to do with dividend income in other books. What I did learn in this one though was that you're supposed to keep your buy/sell contracts for five years after the disposal of shares. Didn't know that, would have assumed they got sent these or something similar by the ASX at the same time I do, so good to know in case I get audited.

Even though it could do with more deduction ideas, it's not a bad book, and is pretty helpful. Of course don't forget to claim the purchase price as a tax deduction in your return, under the costs of managing your own tax affairs section.

My only criticism is that some of the descriptions were too short and simple but at least I knew about that issue and could raise it with my accountant.

101 ways to Save Money on your Tax is a book filled with all the most important facts and figures relating to your tax affairs, whether you are a basic salary and wage earner, business partner or investor.

As a professional accountant I find that it's a handy resource to have on my shelf. But don't worry, it's not very technical- which also means it won't circumvent the need to see your accountant for detailed advice on more difficult topics. For non Accountants, it will help you gain a basic understanding of what's involved with your tax. For me personally the beauty of the book is the combination of basic tax data over a wide range of tax topics, all in one place.
