I love this book but I scan through it and filter the reading of it to my toddler.
All toddlers love being scared by monster stories, but there is nothing like non-fiction scariness as in dangerous animals that really exist in our world, although not in our immediate habitat.

Yes, the words "Kill", "Stab", "Murder" etc are in the book, so generally speaking I would skip the first two pages and just move from illustration to illustration instead. However, in the education of a child, there is no more nobler way to introduce those horrible concepts than in our natural animal world. What is unnatural is human killing, stabing, and murdering, and this could absolutely be explained to children. The fact they see animals doing this should teach them that only animals do this "for survival" and to complete the circle of life. However, this is not how humans behave.

In any case, this book is unique and I am glad we have an interesting, thought-provoking, and dramatic addition to our non-fiction library. Enough about fantasies, ghost stories, and fairy tales. This is the real deal.

My son picked this up at a local book store and asked me to read it to him. It was a bit surprising as I started to read, but I loved it. It's just brutally honest and we aren't used to seeing that in children's books. But I think children can handle reality and would be better off with regular doses of it, instead of purely fictionalized versions of nature which give them distorted views of issues like ethical treatment of animals.

I have mixed feelings about this book. The title, "Deadly! The Truth About the Most Dangerous Creatures on Earth", is captivating – I like it. Even the title page with the exploding ant is fun. However, the first page is a little disturbing and not reflective of the rest of the book. The rest of the book is a factual book about dangerous creatures on Earth, how they survive, how they catch prey. This is life in the animal world and can be very fascinating to a reader. But that first page, listing different ways of killing (stabbing, strangling, electrocuting, etc.), is a bit much I don’t like the sentence, “It’s clear that animals have been almost as GOOD at finding different ways to hurt and murder one another as we humans have.” Good? And the next page with Kill! Kill! Kill! I get what the author was trying to accomplish, liked most of the book, but these first two pages were over the top.

My 9 year old daughter LOVES this series and when she found out there was a new one (and the title was DEADLY!), she was excited! We found this book very informative--there was tons of things we didn't know about animals! We like the sense of humor and the illustration is cute and funny as always. We highly recommend this author/illustrator series.

My 2nd grader came home with this today from the school library, and it looked fun & silly.

However, the first page says things like "drowning, poisoning" and list other forms of death. Then basically says animals are almost as good as people are at hurting and killing each other. What??? I can't understand if it supposed to be funny or not, but it isn't. Why talk about humans murdering each other? I'm all for learning about how the animal kingdom works (the book covers certain "scary" creatures and how they kill their prey) but the opening paragraph is just plain wrong.
