As much as I admire Dougal Dixon's work, this book is disappointing in many ways although it gets an A for effort. The illustrations here would be fine in a book written in the early seventies (they recall typical dino illustrations in kids' dinosaur books of that time).

As much as I admire Dougal Dixon's work, this book is disappointing in many ways although it gets an A for effort. These days, with the computer-generated lifelike images of dinosaurs that are now familiar from the Dorling-Kindersley books and the WALKING WITH DINOSAURS shows and books, if a book is to rely instead on paintings, then they must reach a certain standard. John Sibbick's work for the David Norman and Peter Wellnhofer books would be an example. But in an ambitious book like this they are disappointing.

This book, Dougal Dixon's Dinosaurs, is the absolute best book ever published for children interested in dinosaurs. The book highlights the seven groups, famous paleontologists, and other important facts, such as dig sites and the history of fossil hunting

This book, Dougal Dixon's Dinosaurs, is the absolute best book ever published for children interested in dinosaurs. The book highlights the seven groups, famous paleontologists, and other important facts, such as dig sites and the history of fossil hunting. But, this book is not only for kids. It is so well written by Dougal Dixon and Peter Dodson that even adults will enjoy its wonderful content and learn a lot from it. It is a must for all children, and all adults who are still bitten by the "dinosaur bug".

Dougal Dixon graduated from the University of St Andrews with a Master of Science degree in 1972. Illustrations are wonderful. The book does an excellent job of placing the various types of dinosaurs in the ecological and geological contexts. Well worth the price. He began his career as a geological consultant, nurturing a special interest in fossils and evolution. As a practical geologist, he was involved in excavating a dinosaur-rich site in Jurassic rocks at Durlston on the Dorset coast in 1987. He is now a full-time writer specializing in earth sciences and has written many children's books and encyclopedias with a special interest in dinosaurs.
