What a charming book! Like all of Kleven's work, this story is carefully thought out, yet dreamlike and whimsical.

Elisa Kleven, children's book author and illustrator. All of my books and characters are based on real stories from my childhood and life, but WELCOME HOME, MOUSE best reflects my passion for recycling castoff objects into miniature treasures. In the illustration below, Stanley the young elephant views the house he’s made for his friend Mouse. Stanley has made the house by recycling and re-fashioning a tomato box, postage stamps, autumn leaves, nutshells, and other fun stuff. The photo next to Stanley's mouse house shows a room from my own handmade childhood dollhouse.

Welcome Home, Mouse book. In Elisa Kleven’s expressive, detailed pictures, Stanley finds his inspiration all around him, from here and there, and Stanley loves to help, but sometimes he gets so excited he makes mistakes. While running errands for his mom-CRASH-Stanley bounces his ball right on top of Mouse’s house, smashing it to smithereens. Stanley wants to make up for what he’s done, but how? In Elisa Kleven’s expressive, detailed pictures, Stanley finds his inspiration all around him, from here and there, and this and that.

Kleven's inspiring words and her paint, ink and cut-paper art burst with the same kind of joyous creativity displayed by Stanley. Every word and brush stroke is spot-on in this luminous celebration of creativity, conservation and compassion. Stanley, a clumsy elephant child, wants to help his mother but succeeds only in making messes.

I love this book! The sweet story will be useful to illustrate empathy as Stanley realizes he's ruined mouse's home. He already feels clumsy but now he's ready to make a new house for his new friend. The stunning illustrations are classic Elisa Kleven with loads of details to pour over on each page. Readers can see how the art of collage is unique to her style. Need a subtle story about recycling? This works--don't miss it.

This sweet, sweet story teaches children that although they aren't perfect, they have many other redeeming qualities - and that kindness is the most important quality of all! This story really hits home for me as I too am very clumsy. I had a conversation with a former first grade student who is now in middle school. I asked him what he remembered about 1st grade ans he said that I was a klutz! He also said he loved my class. So, I can relate well to sweet but clumsy Stanley the elephant.

"Welcome Home, Mouse" is one of those unique books that manages to link several different themes in a credible and engaging manner, making it a perfect story for children. Stanley the elephant is quite clumsy and often creates a mess even when he is not looking to create trouble. When Stanley's mom asks him to go to the grocery story and get some tomatoes, he bounds out happily enough, but when a bounced ball smashes into Mouse's house (a repurposed pumpkin), poor Stanley feels really bad and is determined to make amends.

What follows is a wonderful adventure in recycling as Stanley and Mouse go to the grocery store and bakery, and Stanley picks up several items that are no longer needed at both stores. He has a plan you see, and Mouse is kept guessing till the very end! When finally unveiled, Stanley's surprise for Mouse delights both Mouse and Stanley's mom - and shows little children how items can be recycled and put to good use - all that is required is a little flair, creativity, and lots of imagination!

The artwork in this book is incredibly detailed and had us (daughter and I) poring over the pictures. My kindergartner's comments upon finishing this book, "Mom, let's go dig in the recycle bin and create something!" Recommended!

I just love this book. I will say I am definitely a person who judges a *children's* book by its cover, and so that is what first caught my eye in "Welcome Home Mouse." By the storyline is fantastic as well! We borrowed it from the library and my two oldest kids (ages 2 and 4 yrs.) asked to read it again and again. Simply precious!

What a charming book! Like all of Kleven's work, this story is carefully thought out, yet dreamlike and whimsical. Stanley and his friend Mouse will inspire children's creativity, and their sense of compassion, as well. Mom Elephant is a great role model, too. She is supportive, loving and kind, without being overly coddling.
