This book has great pictures, great explanations of the various steps, and great easy to make recipes

Susan Manlin Katzman. This book has great pictures, great explanations of the various steps, and great easy to make recipes. The recipes aren't "dumbed down" for kids, though, for example the pizza recipe has you make the dough and the sauce from scratch (well, the sauce uses tomato puree, close enough).

This book has great pictures, great explanations of the various steps, and great easy to make recipes. The recipes aren't "dumbed down" for kids, though, for example the pizza recipe has you make the dough and the sauce from scratch (well, the sauce uses tomato puree, close enough). I was so intimidated by the thought of making all that from scratch, buy my 7 year old dove in and followed the directions, she only got help with rolling the dough phase. In addition, she has made the oatmeal cookies completely by herself(best ever, and I'm usually not a huge fan), the Apple Cinnamon Muffins, and the sundae recipe.

This has been fabulous for getting her independent in the kitchen. It really simplifies the steps, but the resulting food is impressive. There is no microwaving, or have your mommy chop it for you here, they treat the kids like they are capable. They still provide enough helpful detail in the instruction so that the kid is set up to succeed. My 9 year old has gotten into this book as well, she made the Dreamy Creamy Chocolate Pudding and can't stop talking about it.

I agree with the other reviewer that there is a lot of sugar in the desserts, I get my kids to cut that down some, but they are desserts. I disagree that this book is unhealthy when it comes to fat in the recipes. Kids who eat a healthy, well-balanced diet need some healthy fats, including saturated fats like butter, which is needed for developing the brain. Sure, you shouldn't make dessert every day, we do it once a week or less. I did have my daughter sub whole wheat flour for the white in the pizza & cookies, and it worked great.

But the cookbook doesn't claim to be healthy, it's called scrumptious, and it is that. When I saw my daughter chopping onions (how did she know how to do it? oh, there were several pictures showing her the steps!) and fresh garlic to make the pizza sauce, let me tell you that bumped up the healthiness of that pizza many times over and it just made the cookbook completely win me over.

We'll be using this cookbook for many years to come, so glad we got it!!

I purchased this book for my 12 year old granddaughter who recently developed an interest in cooking. She has made such wonderful progress since being diagnosed with high-functioning autisim when she was 3. She is a beautiful young lady and is an exceptional student.
With her Dad's help and support, she promptly made every receipe in the book--in order! They both truly enjoyed the results and the experience. Her interest has not waned, and I bought her another Williams-Sonoma book to continue her culinary journey.

Real food only in these recipes. Replaced an old, 1970's children's cookbook (handed down) with this because it doesn't have any mixes or cans/boxes as ingredients! Fully accessible to mid-elementary-middle school kids. My little cub scout is excited about cooking a meal for the family!

Love this book. It was a gift and the 9 year old boy has enjoyed using it.

My daughter had this when she was younger and I just bought it for her god children. They cooked dinner the first night. The meatloaf is delicious as is the pasta and broccoli and sugar cookies. Easy to follow directions.

Great photos and cooking hints. Got it for an aspiring 9 yr chef and he loves it.
My 11 year old niece cooked her first meal for the whole family from this cookbook and the meal was deemed a success!
