Start by marking Hikaru no Go, Vol. 11: A Fierce Battle as Want to Read . Hotta and Obata continue to do a wonderful job with this book. The idea behind Hikaru no Go began when Yumi Hotta played a pick-up game of go with her father-in-law.

Start by marking Hikaru no Go, Vol. 11: A Fierce Battle as Want to Read: Want to Read savin. ant to Read. Obata's art is always precise and detailed but clear as a bell and Hotta keeps the characters lively and active in way that draws the reader in addition to providing enough suspense to have two foundational hooks driving at all times (character and plot).

In 1999, she teamed up with Takeshi Obata and the series began. Artist, Takeshi Obata made his debut in 1989 with CYBORG JI-CHAN G. The runner-up recipient of the 30th Annual Tezuka Award, Obata's major works include HIKARABITO DENSETSU and MASHIN BOUKENTAN LAMP-LAMP.

Hikaru no Go (ヒカルの碁, lit. "Hikaru's Go") is a coming of age story manga, based on the board game Go, written by Yumi Hotta and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. The series has been adapted by Studio Pierrot as a 75-episode anime television series, with a broadcast between 2001 and 2003 on TV Tokyo.

Yumi Hotta, Hikaru no Go vol. 11: A Fierce Battle (ViZ, 1998)

I hate to say it, but as both series go on, Hikaru no Go is starting to supplant Bleach as my favorite manga series. With most fighting manga, the whole "fight - get stronger - fight - get stronger" cycle is overstated and obviously artificial, but with Hikaru no Go, it's much slower-moving, there are plausible explanations for various events in the get stronger part of the cycle (plateauing, making dumb lucky moves, etc.), and Hotta, over the course of the pro test story arc, has built a credible, realistic stable of strong personalities. Hotta completes that arc in A Fierce Battle, the eleventh volume in the series, and the long-awaited match, with Toya-trained Ochi facing Sai-trained Shindo, is a barnburner. That you know how it's going to come out despite Hotta cliffhanger makes it not one whit less exciting, and that's part of the fun here. A banner volume in a fantastic series that's well worth your time, even if you're not a manga fan (yet). **** ½

Yumi Hotta, Hikaru no Go: The Pro Test Preliminaries: Day Four (ViZ, 1998)

Aside from the rather odd choice of title (the book covers the entire preliminaries), another winning entry in the series. Hikaru is used to playing with his study group, but the pro test preliminaries allow anyone, including adults up to the age of twenty-nine, so Hikaru is playing with people he's never played with before. He meets Tsubata, a heavily-bearded, obnoxious adult who seems to take a shine to him, which throws his game off tremendously. Can Hikaru overcome his problems and make it to the pro test? Good stuff. ****

What a find! My family loves anime and manga but we have a problem with much of it because it is too violent. This series centers around the Japanese game of Go. The premise is that a middle school boy, Hikaru, becomes the "avatar" of the ghost of a Go master. The Go master plays games through Hikaru -- and then Hikaru becomes interested in GO in his own right. The premise and the story line allow us to see an interesting aspect of Japanese culture and the rivalries inherent in Go provides fertile ground for character development. My seven year old son LOVES this series and can't wait for number 9 to come out. He has even become interested in learning to play Go (playing with his father) and asked for a Go board for Christmas!

Hikaru Shindo, upon discovering a possessed Go board, finds himself befriending the spirit of wronged Go master of the heian period. Sai's spirit has remained with the board until he can accomplish his life's work and play the ultimate Go move.

Unfortunately for Sai, Hikaru discovers his own desire to master Go and in Volume 11, Hikaru has become a professional. Sai's dream is pushed aside to allow Hikaru develop his own abilities and pursue his own dream.

The characters are likeable, the art is appealing and the level of intensity in the story is engaging. At the end of each volume of "Hikaru no Go" you *want* to know what will happen.

This is a great Shounen Jump title, suitable for boys and girls alike.
