Prince, a little Icelandic pony, is growing up. He is Anna's pony. She's raised him from a foal, and loves him dearly. This children's book, bought as a gift for my six year old niece, is a touching, clearly and well written story of a little Islandic girl and the friendship she cultivates with her pony, who is skittish at first, and then, little by little, she wins his trust. The artwork is realistic, soothing in its scope and coloration, and evokes a true sense of place, (Iceland.

When the pony put his nose down to the grass, the dog whimpered softly and touched Sassy’s nose with his. All of a sudden, Tough Enough’s ears brought him news. He turned them toward distant sounds.

The artwork is realistic, soothing in its scope and coloration, and evokes a true sense of place, (Iceland.) It is, I think, one of those books you read in childhood, keep for many years because you cherish it, go back to when you are older, (and too old for children's books,) and, because it is a true classic, pass it down to your own children. Highly recommended!

Love this series.

Young students can be very observant. A few of my young read-to students pointed out the illustrator's inconsistency in the story. On pages 1-2, Anna is walking to find her pony, Prince. She is wearing blue overalls with a bib and straps that cover her shoulders. By the time she gets to the small herd on pages 3-4, she is now wearing brown pants and somehow there's a sweater involved according to the text. Prince has a blue streak flashing out of his open mouth, which is supposed to be his tugging on a sweater, although his mouth is open and the "sweater" seems to be coming from UNDER Anna's short-sleeve shirt--and an open mouth equals no tugging. The rest of the story has no illustrator-author incongruities.

We do learn from the story how a horse has to develop trust in a handler, a handler needs patience with a horse, and how some horses are easily spooked by unfamiliar sights and sounds. It is a warm story about a young girl (including her grandmother) who has set her sites on a particular yet-to-be-ridden young pony, and a human-pony friendship that is beginning to develop.

I did not find the unfolding of the story dramatic or heart-tugging. Some books get a round of applause from the younger set, but this is not one of them. There are three books in this Anna-Prince series.
