However, even though Kudlinski has utilized her grandmother's reminiscences for background on the period, her effort to depict the influenza epidemic is not successful, for she does not develop the strong sense of time and place that historical fiction demands. She states the time frame and uses slang appropriate to the period, but these are not enough to create a strong setting.

I wish this was still in print. My grandson, 9, couldn't put it down and then, when he finished, he started over again. It has a preface explaining the flu epidemic at the end of World War I so kids get a factual basis to tie the storyline to. It's great if a parent or other adult can read along to expand on some of the details of daily life back then, but it's complete enough that a good reader can get the feeling of having read a really good story by him/herself.

My daughter's 9 and 7 enjoyed it! It was heartwarming to "see" the young boy come to help his mother and sister in a dire time of need. It also brought awareness to my girls of how dangerous and wide spread the flu epidemic was during that period.

arrived quickly. item was as described. great book!

Too much barfing and nasty description for me. It was sort of horrifying but most history books leave out any mention of the worldwide flu epidemic so I guess you could read it if you were curious...
lubov
