Such, too, hasbeen the fate of Johanna Spyri, the Swiss authoress, whose reputationis mistakenly supposed to rest on her story of Heidi

Many writers have suffered injustice in being known as the author ofbut one book. Robinson Crusoe was not Defoe's only masterpiece, nordid Bunyan confine his best powers to Pilgrim's Progress. Such, too, hasbeen the fate of Johanna Spyri, the Swiss authoress, whose reputationis mistakenly supposed to rest on her story of Heidi. To be sure, Heidi is a book that in its field can hardly be overpraised. The winsome, kind-hearted little heroine in her mountain backgroundis a figure to be remembered from childhood to old age. Nevertheless,Madame Spyri has shown here but one side of her narrative ability.

Cornelli had not appeared at Martha's cottage for quite a number ofdays, and so Martha was filled with grief and anxiety. Cornelli was very much surprised when she found that Saturday eveninghad come again, for the last two weeks had flown by very fast. She ran through the garden. Under the plum tree lay the last fullyripened dark gold plums.

History & Fiction. It seemed as if a storm was in the air; everybodywas silent, and on all faces, except one, heavy clouds seemed to beresting. Nika sat brooding and staring in front of her, for Agnes hadinterpreted to her their little brother's words. She swallowed veryhard on every mouthful, because she had to swallow a great deal morebesides.

The grown-ups are contrasted with much humor and genuine feeling. The story of Cornelli, therefore, deserves to equal Heidi in popularity and there can be no question that it will delight Madame Spyri's admirers and will do much to increase the love which all children feel for her unique and sympathetic genius. Johanna Spyri's writing is always wonderful! My heart just cried for poor little Cornelli. Children who misunderstand/are misunderstood by the adults in their lives make me want to walk into the book and shake someone (usually not the child) more than just about any other plot device. And it lasted for such a long time! I was so glad when Dino's visit finally brought them together. His sunny friendliness was perfect for Cornelli, and they made a really adorable pair

Cornelli by Johanna Spyri - book cover, description, publication history.

Many writers have suffered injustice in being known as the author of but one book. Such has been the fate of Johanna Spyri, the Swiss authoress, whose reputation is mistakenly supposed to rest on her story of Heidi. To be sure, Heidi is a book that in its field can hardly be overpraised. But the present story is possessed of a deeper treatment of character, combined with equal spirit and humor of a different kind. Cornelli, the heroine, suffers temporarily from the unjust suspicion of her elders, a misfortune which, it is to be feared, still occurs frequently in the case of sensitive children. . . .

Bliss
All of Johanna Spyri's books are beautifully written and engaging, with three-dimensional characters, both adults and children, whose feelings, actions and motives are insightfully and compassionately drawn. Subtle lessons in morality and the slow building of character through real, lived experience (mistakes!) seem always to have been her underlying themes. No heavy handed preaching here. No one-dimensional right and wrong--every situation complex just like today's world. (Though clearly not!) Truly great books for both parents and elementary age children to read --great modeling of parenting skills, even though nineteenth century! Adults helping children, but letting them learn by doing and living and expressing themselves creatively.

You will like 'CORNELLI' Written by the same author, it's a similar story, a misunderstood child, her problems, and how things are resolved. I read this when I was young, it was in my mom's library, and loved it then. It's still a lovely story, even now as an adult.

If you ever read Heidi and enjoyed it, all of her other stories are similar-There is always hope for the future even in times of sadness.

This is not a book for young children. It would be great to read as a family and to discuss. It has wonderful values but again
it needs adult input if younger children are being included.

Again, a great read by Johanna Spyri! Similar to Heidi, yet nothing like it at all! What life lessons learned while one is caught up in the story. I really enjoyed it!

I choose this book besause it had the same auther as Hiedi. And I enjoyed Hiedi so much and it is the type of story I enjoy. I'ld recomend to others..
Johanna Spyri is one of the best authors of children books - Heidi is her best known book but all her books deal with children, their difficulties at a young age and the right attitude to take. The books have all a deep spiritual side as well and do not necessarily end as expected. Highly recommend any of her books.
