The illustrations throughout the book by Jennifer Taylor were perfect for the world of Caux, which seemed to have been drawn out of old nursery rhymes, and Susannah Appelbaum's writing is vividly descriptive of the setting and the characters' emotions and personalities: Queen Nightshade, for example, on p. 347, 'was known for her awful experiments with turtledoves baked in pies. She did terrible things with cute bunnies and vinegar. She raced turtles into the soup pot. I also thought that the cover of the book depicting Shoo the crow, poison ivy and cinquefoil flowers was wonderful. It was a clever touch to include a little red bug in the picture, but no bettle. What is a bettle, anyway?

Ivy Manx - the chosen one, the nobel child, the shepherd of weeds - battles her father, the evil master of the Taster's Guild, Vidal Verjouce to rescue Caux. I guess fleshing the battles out more would have added more pages to this already pretty large ( for a children's book) book. VioletBramble, March 12, 2017.

Back in the Kingdom of Caux after her journey to its sisterland, Ivy wakes up in a dismal orphanage alongside her friend Rue. Accompanied by a strange woman named Lumpen—who looks suspiciously like a scarecrow—the girls make their way back to Templar to plan a massive battle against the Tasters Guild, where Vidal Verjouce is making ink out of the deadly Scourge Bracken weed. Rocamadour grows darker and more dangerous with every drop. With an army of scarecrows, a legion of birds, and her friends and uncle by her side, it's up to Ivy—the true "Shepherd of Weeds"—to wage war against the Guild, defeat her own father, and restore order to the plant world.

I got the second book at a used book store, so went ahead and bought the 1st to read and the last too. I've yet to read them as I'm very busy right now. But I know it's going to be great!!

This is the third and concluding volume in the series. Ivy and Rue find themselves trapped in an orphanage, knowing that Vidal is pulling his evil plan in place with the Scourge ink. They must escape and find a way to fight against him. Ivy begins to assemble an unlikely army; with the source of the water necessary for the ink, she gains allies in the birds and scarecrows, and must take on the title of Shepherd of the Weeds, in order to defeat him and save the kingdom.

Beautifully written, captures any child or adult's imagination and takes you on quite a ride of twists and turns. This book transports you into a completely different world (or two). The characters are rich and the *poisonous* atmosphere keeps you at the edge of your seat. A grand finale to a great series... (Although I would welcome more!)

A friend introduced me to this series a while ago as she knew I am a big fan of the Lord of The Rings books and I have been a big fan ever since on these Poisons of Caux books. Applebaum's writing keep you hooked from page to page, I love the illustrations and interesting artistic touches - Book Three has Oxblood (colored) Ink.
