The illustrations and the story in this book are both absolutely gorgeous. The Sandman wants to find a friend, and yet, no matter where he goes everyone falls asleep. The story takes us through the night, all over the countryside and under the sea. This lovely story is one which I have made a point of giving to every single one of my friends as they have kids. It has instantly become an absolute favorite for all of them, and has been read over and over.

It breaks my heart that this wonderful piece of children's literature is no longer in print. But, I have found perfectly untouched copies for sale secondhand. However, when it really matters (and this book definitely matters), if the book shows use, doesn't it just show the love that a child somewhere had for it?

{Oh! I apologize. There I go, digressing to parallels between real life and The Velveteen Rabbit.}

Alright, back on track. Don't allow yourself to skip over this book because there are no copies Prime Eligible. You will be doing yourself, and the little one for which the book should be intended, a disservice. The Sandman, by Udo Weigelt, is a treasure. Find yourself a copy, or five for gifts and good measure, and cherish it. I'm submitting this review, and buying three more tonight.

Read and enjoy, y'all!

My 3 1/2 year old believes in the sandman. Every morning when she wakes up and attempts to clear her eyes she declares - - the Sandman got me! I was searhing for a book that would "so to speak," explain the sandman to her. We were both delighted to find this book and read about the mysterious little man who visits her and every boy and girl each night. This story, about the search for a compatibale friend is very sweet but it is the exquisitely drawn illustrations that sets it apart from other books.
A nice read and a beautiful visual to share with your young children.
